AMD is developing a new GPU called Navi 23 that is known internally as 'NVIDIA Killer' and that will be released next year. We have seen this GPU named in the Linux drivers, which confirm its existence alongside Navi 22 a few days ago.

Navi 23 will be AMD's high-end GPU to compete against the RTX 2080 / Ti

Based on Linux drivers, AMD is preparing three new GPUs based on TSMC's 7nm + node and RDNA2 architecture. These are Navi 23, Navi 22 and Navi 21. All would be shaping up to position themselves above the RX 5700 / XT series.

Based on a series of patents that AMD has filed, as well as some rumors in the industry and AMD's own official roadmap, the second-generation RDNA architecture is set to be the first in the company to fully support Ray acceleration. Hardware tracing, similar to Nvidia's RTX series.

However, according to this particular source, only Navi 23 is being called internally as the "NVIDIA Killer". This is because Navi 23 is said to be the great Navi GPU that would directly compete with the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti, which currently have no competition in the high-end graphics card range.

It is too early to know how competitive this GPU is going to be. Especially with Nidia's Amper around the corner, which seems to represent a considerable generational leap compared to Turing.

Based on patents and known information, Navi 23 would come with the following technologies:

  • Variable speed shading More efficient mixed precision calculation Smarter and faster caches Persistent computing and higher instructions per clock More advanced voltage regulation for higher clock speeds, among many other improvements.

Now that the first RDNA Navi graphics cards are already on the market with a 7nm node, AMD can focus on further fine-tuning the architecture by leaving behind the transition to the new manufacturing node. The challenge will be to improve energy efficiency, knowing that the RX 5700 / XT are graphics with a consumption of 225W (XT). To give you an idea, it would be consuming the same power as an RTX 2080, despite having a matrix size of less than half (251mm² vs 545m²).

Next year will be very interesting to see those that AMD and Nvidia have prepared for us in the graphics card segment. We will keep you informed.
