Intel and AMD are vying fiercely to see how many cores they can take on a single CPU, and this arduous race does nothing but benefit PC enthusiasts around the world.

AMD Launches Eight-Core Ryzen Threadripper 1900X Processor, Cheapest in Threadripper Range

Professionals will probably have no problem disbursing 1000 or 2000 euros for 16 or 18-core processors, although those with limited budgets have another option, the third member of the Threadripper range, Ryzen 1900X with eight cores and a price of $ 549.

In comparison, the newly announced 12-core Threadripper sells for $ 799, while the 16-core model reaches $ 999.

The Threadripper 1900X boasts speeds between 3.8GHz and 4GHz, and will arrive fully unlocked for overclocking. It costs about $ 50 more than AMD's other eight-core processor, the Ryzen 7 1800X, but it brings more capabilities for the most demanding users.

For example, it has support for four-channel DDR4 RAM, instead of just two channels. The Threadripper chip also has 64 PCIe lanes, compared to 24 on the 1800X. That makes it more suitable for various graphics cards, as well as for a greater diversity of tasks where the processing of a lot of data is required.

On the other hand, the Threadripper 1900X is built for AMD's HEDT X399 platform, so motherboards won't be that expensive, though for now there is a shortage of X399 motherboards considering the high demand for new AMD Threadripper processors. The price difference between the AM4 platform and the X399 is still very high for now, but it will remain to be seen if we will see somewhat more affordable X399 motherboards in the near future.
