Rumors and speculation are over, AMD presented in society its new graphics cards belonging to the Navi generation: RX 5000.

AMD Announces Navi-Based RX 5000 Graphics Card Family

Dr. Lisa SU, AMD CEO, kicked off Computex with big announcements of the red company's new products, including the new Navi graphics cards. These new graphics cards from AMD will have a clear objective, to assault the mid and high range. The company announced the RX 5700 series, which would have somewhat higher performance than the RTX 2070.

RX 5700 to dethrone the RTX 2070

Beyond the announcement of the first two Navi graphics cards, AMD wanted to give details about the new graphics architecture and what the changes introduced since the Polaris and Vega generation consist of in order to offer products with excellent performance at a competitive price.

The red company confirmed that Navi will be compatible with PCIe 4.0 connections and will use RDNA, which is a new 7nm architecture that would supplant GCN used in Polaris and Vega. Moving from AMD to the Navi architecture does not mean that you completely abandon the GCN architecture forever. The company will continue to use the old architecture, but the new RDNA architecture is an entirely new design that will be used in "the next decade" of Radeon products.

RDNA includes a new calculation unit (CU) design optimized for efficiency and instruction per clock performance, a new cache hierarchy to provide higher bandwidth and lower power consumption, along with an optimized graphics channel to improve performance per clock and higher frequencies.

AMD promises 1.5X performance per watt and 25% more performance per clock cycle.

performance

Comparisons with the competition are inevitable and AMD has shared a benchmark with the Strange Brigade game where an RX 5700 is seen outperforming the RTX 2070. It is estimated to have 10% more performance than the Nvidia alternative. We will surely see much more about the performance at E3 2019 that will be held in June.

Price and availability

AMD confirmed that the RX 5000 series with the graphics cards of the RX 5700 line will come out in July and that there will be a special presentation talking about them at E3 2019. Unfortunately they have not given details on prices or specific models, so we will have surely wait until E3 to find out.

If AMD manages to outperform the RTX 2070 at a lower price, it can put Nvidia in a bind in that segment. We will keep you informed.
