In an interview with Anandtech , AMD revealed that their goal with future Zen cores, including Zen 3, Zen 4, and Zen 5, would be to exceed the current standard IPC growth rate, offering end-users higher performance than the CPU in each generation.
AMD wants to overcome the 7% IPC growth barrage with each Zen generation
We know that AMD is working on future Zen cores with the complete Zen 3 design and multiple teams working on the next generation of Zen 4 and Zen 5 cores. AMD CTO Mark Papermaster had some interesting information to share regarding their future Zen core roadmap and the IPC benefits they have internally estimated for their upcoming products. First, Mark was asked about AMD's product roadmap, to which he replied that AMD is following a 12-18 month cadence.
The 12-18 month cadence would point to a 2020 second half release for Zen 3, which is in line with what many have predicted for Ryzen's next generation and EPYC's CPU lineup. Also in a previous interview, Mark had confirmed that both the Zen 4 and Zen 5 cores were being developed by two different teams. This means that AMD is simultaneously working on both Zen 4 and Zen 5 with two teams to streamline the development and design process.
The most interesting information is when AMD was asked about the CPI growth of future Zen cores. It was stated that the industry as a whole has had a slow CPI growth trajectory of 7% per year and AMD's objective is to overcome it.. AMD has already overcome this with its previous releases, offering a huge 15% IPC growth with its Zen 2 core architecture and is expected to offer up to 17% IPC growth next year with its Zen 3 cores.

"We have said before that the industry has had an annual growth rate of 7% in monofilament performance, and our goal is to exceed it with each generation of our products, " Pappermaster said.
