Today the new AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT will be officially launched on the market in its 4GB and 8GB GDDR6 versions at 14Gbps. AMD returns to the fray with its 7nm Navi 14 architecture and the revamped RDNA that is giving it excellent results. In fact it is the main reason why Nvidia has put the stacks released more Super cards in the mid-range and entry.

Unboxing

The version that we are going to analyze is already a personalized one, it comes from the hand of Sapphire, which is precisely the Pulse Radeon RX 5500 XT model. For this, the assembler has used a presentation that consists of a rigid cardboard box that shows us a certain amount of information about the card on its outer faces in the colors different from the brand and Radeon. But we hardly have internal specifications, so that's what we are for.

We open the box and find ourselves more or less the same as always, the graphics card placed in an antistatic bag and in turn protected by a cardboard mold. All ports are protected with plastic caps so that nothing enters them.

Exterior design

AMD is doing a phenomenal job with the revamped Navi 14 architecture for this new series of graphics cards. But this is only the beginning of what is to come, since with Navi 23 in 2020, cards with hardware Ray Tracing acceleration will finally arrive.

But let's focus on what lies ahead, this AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT is AMD's definitive assault on the basic mid-range of gaming graphics cards. A GPU that has undoubtedly put the green brand in check, forcing it to launch its Super soft drink in the GTX 16 and lower prices. Competition always benefits the consumer friends. Even doing this, this card comes directly to unseat the new 1650 Super, although we will see this a little later, as well as its specifications.

The model that we analyzed as we have already pointed out is the customized version of Sapphire, always one of the first assemblers to launch AMD cards at a very low price. To mention that this time the AMD reference model would come with an ITX size heatsink and a single axial fan, successfully abandoned blowers.

The Sapphire custom model comes with a dual-fan heatsink called Dual-X Cooling with a fairly sober design in terms of details despite the fact that in the central part we have different steps and relief that improve in appearance. This cover is made of hard ABS plastic. The dimensions of the cooling package are 232 mm long, 135 mm wide and 40 mm thick, thus occupying 2 expansion slots as normal.

Then we will open this card to check that its aluminum heatsink has improved significantly, but what we have at a glance is a system consisting of two 90 mm fans that practically occupy the entire cover. This time it does not integrate 0 dB technology, so these fans will always be working.

They are made up of 9 helical helices with a helical design to ensure a good balance between flow and static pressure so that they are noisy. The bearings have been improved with a double ball bearing, which should give us a longer life. These fans cannot be managed independently as they are connected in a single 4-pin header.

Like other manufacturers, this AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT has open sides in the middle to allow hot air to escape from inside the heatsink. This occurs spatially on the inner side, and the front, which is practically completely exposed. In no case do we have a lighting system in this card, nor in the fans, something that is usually common in the creations of this brand.

Now we turn to see the top of the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT which in this case is fully covered by an aluminum backplate. We are pleased to see such good build quality on such a card and for this tight price. This backplate has a series of openings in the central and front area to help the exit of hot air from the interior.

Something that strikes us about this card is how much the heatsink protrudes in the lateral area with respect to the width of the slot. We would say that much more than other models on the market, and it is not precisely because of the size of the PCB, but to not expose the heatpipes that distribute heat. In any case, it is not a bad design in general, sober and elegant, although the fan area could be more elaborate.

Ports and connections

We went to see the port area of ​​the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT to see what it offers us in terms of video connectivity and the rest of interfaces and power. Back we have:

It is the most widely used configuration in most cards on the market with some exceptions. It is also the most useful, since it offers 4 outputs for 4K monitors at 60 Hz. We must know that the DisplayPort port will give us a maximum resolution of 8K at 60 FPS, while in 4K we will reach 165 Hz or 4K @ 60 FPS at 30 bits depth, and in 5K we can go up to 120 Hz. In the case of HDMI, it supports a 4K @ 60 Hz resolution, so the best option will be the long DisplayPort for high-performance monitors.

Like the rest of the cards with the new Navi 14 architecture, we have a PCIe 4.0 x16 data interface, thus using the new standard implemented on motherboards with X570 chipset and now also TRX40. We don't have to worry about compatibility, as the standard is backwards compatible with 3.0 for Intel boards.

Regarding the power connection, this card will use an 8-pin connector, instead of for example the 6 of the 1650 Super. The AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT is a card that has a higher power consumption, and a TDP of 130W. Finally we will see on the PCB a single 4-pin connector for the two fans of the heatsink.

We now continue with the opening of this AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT graphics card in which we will see in more detail its custom heatsink and the PCB. To separate both components we will have to remove a total of 8 screws in the backplate part. 4 of them located in the socket and another 4 in the corners to secure the block.

Dual-X Cooling Heatsink

The block that the brand has chosen for this GPU with a TDP of 130W is one with a monoblock design made of aluminum. It occupies absolutely all the space available in the casing, with a good density of fins positioned longitudinally to favor the axial flow of air generated by the fans. We are no longer surprised to see this type of heatsink so large even in the mid-range which is very great news.

This block has a fairly large cold plate made of aluminum and a bare copper core that makes contact with the chipset. We think it is an excellent solution for this type of GPU, since its area is somewhat larger than the GTX16, specifically 158 mm 2 and thus no gaps are left on the sides.

But just above it we have three nickel-plated copper heatpipes that capture this heat and transport it to the ends of the heatsink. They are also quite thick tubes, 6 mm in diameter, so we will see what the temperatures are in the set. As is usual in AMD, these chipsets generate more heat than Nvidia, so we see configurations of these dimensions.

For the 4 GDDR6 memory chips and 6 phase VRM MOSFETS we have metal based silicone thermal pads judging by their silver color. This completes the heat sink of this card, which looks very good.

Navi 14 architecture waging war in the mid-range

If we highlight something about this new generation of AMD cards, it is that they are finally in a position to get a good slice of the gaming market. There are many users who have opted for the RX 5700 and we think that the same will happen with these cards that will perform very well in Full HD - High and even 2K - Medium / Low, and also at a very good price.

In this new AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT it has inside with Navi 14 architecture and manufacturing process in 7 nm FinFET. This new architecture continues to use RDNA, the instruction set developed by AMD that significantly increases the core IPC with lower power consumption. It was the leap the manufacturer had to take to be competitive.

The 158 mm 2 graphics processor is made up of 22 computing units that have a total of 1408 stream processors, the same number as the RX 5500 version. In fact, the main difference between the two is the frequency at which they work., since in the XT model we have a game frequency of 1717 MHz and 1845 MHz in boost mode, while in the normal model it drops to 1670 MHz and 1717 MHz respectively. This makes us have a performance of 88 TMUs (texture units) and 32 ROPs (raster units), a capacity of 5.20 TFLOPS in FP32, 10.4 TFLOPS in FP16 and 162.4 GT / s in rate of texture. Which should translate into somewhat better performance than the GTX 1650 Super.

Turning now to memory capacity, we find two versions. The one that we analyze is the 4 GB one, but we recommend opting for the 8 GB one because it gives in the manufacturer's tests between 2 and 6 FPS more, which is quite worth it. 4GB currently falls short for depth of field and antialiasing. Two solutions have been incorporated into this card, such as the Radeon Anti-Lag to improve the response time between the response of the card and the peripherals, and the Radeon Boost, to translate it into a better FPS rate in the game.

In any case, GDDR6 type memory has been used to its maximum capacity with an effective frequency of 14 Gbps. They work on a 128-bit bus at a bandwidth of 224 GB / s, which sets the balance in this sense for AMD. We will see how they behave in overclocking, being the pending subject of this architecture. The TDP of this GPU is 130W, so the manufacturer recommends sources with more than 450W.

Last but not least we are going to look at the PCB, more specifically the VRM which is made up of no less than 6 power phases with 3-state MOSFETS and a digital PWM controller IoR 35217. A large capacity set that should not have problems with consumption above 140W.

Test bench and performance test

Let's get into what interests us most, which is the performance of this AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT. For this we have used the same tests and games as for the other cards. Our test bench consists of the following components:

All the synthetic tests and tests have been carried out with the filters as they come in the configuration of each program. The tests consist of tests that run in the three main resolutions, Full HD, 2K and 4K. We have run all of them on the Windows 10 Pro operating system in its fully updated 1903 version and with Adrenalin drivers also in their latest version.

What are we looking for in these tests?

Game testing

We are now going to evaluate the real performance in games, thus having a more palpable proof of what our AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT will be able to deliver under DirectX 12, OpenGL and Vulkan in this case.

The tests will be carried out at the three most used resolutions in gaming, we refer to Full HD (1920 x 1080p), QHD or 2K (2560 x 1440p) and UHD or 4K (3840 x 2160p). In this way, we will have a complete range of results to be able to compare them with other GPUs. For each of the games, we have kept the automatic settings selected in each and for each resolution.

Overclocking

As in other cards, we are going to overclock this AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT to see how far we can increase its performance.

For this we have used MSI Afterburner which is one of the best applications to perform this procedure in a simple and fast way. In this way we have carried out a new test in 3DMark Fire Strike.

Temperatures and consumption

Finally, we have proceeded to stress the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT for a few hours while monitoring its temperatures and consumption. For this, we have used as FurMark for stress and HWiNFO to capture results, along with a wattmeter that measures the power of all the complete equipment, except the monitor. With the arrival of winter, the ambient temperature in the room is 24 ° C.

As we can see in the graph we obtain 27 ºC at rest and 68 ºC in this reference model. Some temperatures more than good.

Regarding consumption, it gives us some results that have surprised us… We have 72W at rest and 252 W at maximum performance for the graphics card. When we also stress the processor 100%, we have 364 W.

Final words and conclusion about AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT

The time comes to value the AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT, we see that it is a very interesting card and that it perfectly meets the requirements of users who want to play high Full HD or want to play 2K in the range of 40 to 60 FPS.

AMD decides not to launch a reference model and gives free rein to launch its new graphics card with PCB and custom heatsink: XFX, Sapphire, MSI, PowerColor, Gigabyte, ASUS and ASRock are the chosen ones.

In our cases we have received a Sapphire RX 5500 XT Pulse. The results obtained are very good and its heatsink leaves this graphics card very cool. We cannot complain about this model, since we believe it will be one of the best quality / price, as the company has accustomed us.

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

The temperatures are very good, its 27ºC at rest and 68ºC at maximum performance are great. Consumption seems a little too much for us . We do not know if it is something specific, but in our tests these figures have jumped us.

Also point out that the GPU BOOST with certain games do not work at all fine. AMD confirms that the next driver updates will fix it . Anyway, you can manually overclock and get a little extra performance out of it.

Its price in Spanish stores is around 220 to 240 euros (depending on the model). Which makes it clear that it is a graphics card that competes with the Nvidia GTX 1650 SUPER for performance. What is the best option of the two? We believe that the price is what makes the difference, and we hope that the price of this RX 5500 XT will drop.
