During AMD's press conference at CES 2020, the company unveiled the RX 5600 XT. The graphics card had quite competent specifications, but they played down the importance of keeping it far enough away from the current RX 5700 series to make sense on the market. It seemed to be well positioned with AMD showing its superiority over the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, and for $ 279 it was not bad.

A new last-minute BIOS and the price cut of the RTX 2060 have tarnished the launch of the RX 5600 XT

There they announced the complete specifications of the card, the number of SP units, the core clocks, the memory clocks and the TDP. Everything was going well. After noting them that the GTX 1660 SUPER offered better value than the GTX 1660 Ti in the same market, they even came back and updated with new slides that showed how it compared to the SUPER variant.

Everything changed when NVIDIA decided to lower the price of the RTX 2060 to $ 299. This graphics card is hopelessly superior to the RX 5600 XT and only costs $ 20 more.

This put AMD in a dilemma, or they were announcing a price cut on this card for the launch, or what ended up happening, improving its performance metrics by increasing its frequencies through a new vBIOS.

The solution seemed effective, the GPU frequencies were increased and the VRAM memory went from 12 GBps to 14 GBps for an extra performance gain of approximately 10%. The problem with this is that AMD's decision made the majority of partners against the counter. The available cards were already in the distribution channel and were going to the stores at that time. So, at the last minute, partners were met with this "extra" performance.

In this way, the first buyers took a Radeon RX 5600 XT with the 'slower' BIOS, so they are now asked to update on their own. This would not be a problem if it were not because, in addition, not all graphics cards and manufacturers will have or provide this BIOS to increase performance.

MSI stated that it will not offer the new BIOS, while ASUS is more open in this regard. The reason is that many models were created with specifications and a TDP already stipulated for months. Now AMD is changing the specs and manufacturers cannot guarantee that their graphics cards will perform well over time at higher frequencies.

In ComputerBase there is a compilation of GPUs that can be updated and which cannot. All this move has tarnished the launch of the RX 5600 XT, despite the fact that the card is still a recommended product, as we demonstrated in our review.
