The embargo has yet to be lifted for AMD's Zen 2- based Ryzen 4000 laptops but it appears that some reviews of the Ryzen 4500U-based laptop have appeared on Overclockers.ua . The review shows us a good representation of what can be expected from the main line of products based on the third generation AMD Ryzen 4000 CPU.

AMD Ryzen 5 4500U is up to 50% faster than Core i5-8250U

The tested product was an ACER Swift 3 S314-42 laptop that has not yet hit the shelves. The laptop features an AMD 'Renoir' Ryzen 5 4500U CPU that has 6 cores, 6 threads with a 2.3 GHz base clock and a 4.0 GHz boost clock. The chip has 8 MB of L3 cache and 3 MB of L2 cache and has a 15W TDP. Ryzen 4000 U-series processors are ideally positioned against the 10nm Intel Ice Lake-U and 14nm Comet Lake-U chips. The Ryzen 5 4500U also comes with the updated 7nm Vega 6 graphics core that features 384 cores and a graphics clock up to 1500 MHz.

Notebookcheck made a good effort to compare the laptop with a similarly priced Intel solution based on the 8th generation Core i5-8250U that has 4 cores and 8 threads. According to tests, the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U is up to 50% faster than the Core i5-8250U which is also a 15W piece. The new Intel Core i5-10210U or Core i5-10510U and even those based on Ice Lake-U were not compared, but it can be concluded that the higher clock speeds of the 10th generation parts of Comet Lake-U or not Availability of the Ice Lake notebooks are not going to help Intel much in the notebook segment in general.

Moving on to graphics performance, the Radeon Vega 6 GPU of the Ryzen 5 4500U is 60% more powerful than that of the current existing Ryzen 3000. The GPU can run most games at 1080p with decent frame rate, while the most demanding titles can be played at 720p resolution.

Battery time appears to be quite robust as well with tests reporting up to 12 hours of battery time on standard workloads (PCMark 10 suite).

The new APUs for notebooks really promise a good performance leap, especially at the graphics performance level. We will keep you informed.
