The arrival of AMD Ryzen processors has meant that the eight cores are much more accessible than ever for the bulk of users. The AMD Ryzen 7 1700 is the cheapest 8/16 processor in the world and the most energy efficient thanks to its TDP of just 65W, lower than even competitive quad-core models.
Thanks to this processor we can build a really powerful system for video games without the budget skyrocketing, in fact we can accompany it with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti and it would still be cheaper than opting for the cheapest 8-core processors from Intel, the Core i7-5960X and the Intel Core i7-6900K that we already analyzed on the web in the middle of last year.

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 vs i7 5960X + GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in 4K
The aggressive price of AMD's new Ryzen 7 processors allows us to get a team made up of the Ryzen 7 1700 and the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti for an amount of money very similar to what we would spend with an Intel configuration without the graphics card. To put us in perspective we see the prices of the components:
AMD team:
- AMD Ryzen 7 1, 700 € 369 GeForce GTX 1080 Ti € 829 MSI B350 Tomahawk € 115
Total: 1, 313 euros
AMD RYZEN 7 1700- 3.7 GHz processor, AM4 socket with Wraith Spire fan included Processor frequency: 3.7 GHz; Number of processor cores: 8; Processor socket: Socket AM4 210.11 EUR PNY GF1080GTX8GEPB - Graphics card (GeForce GTX 1080, 8 GB, GDDR5X, 256 bit, 7680 x 4320 Pixels, PCI Express x16 3.0) Faster, smoother gameplay / - Synchronized frame delivery; Innovative new technologies, including audio, physics, and haptics for VRIntel team:
- Intel Core i7-6900K 1099 euros MSI X99A SLI PLUS USB 3.1 244 euros
Total: 1, 343 euros
Intel Core i7-6900K 3.2GHz 20MB Smart Cache Box - Processor (Intel High End Desktop Processors, LGA 2011-v3, PC, i7-6900K, DDR4-SDRAM, 64-bit) Processor with 3.2 GHz frequency and 20 MB cache; Intel Turbo Boost Max 3.0 technology that identifies the best cores in a processor 418, 78 EUR MSI X99A SLI Plus - Pro Motherboard (Intel X99 Chipset, DDR4 Memories, OC Engine, Audio Boost, Military Class IV) Enthusiastic platform with DDR4 Memories; OC EngineAs we see the AMD configuration is even cheaper, 30 euros difference that we can invest in buying a better box or chassis for our equipment or in better cooling. If we think of other 8-core processors from Intel, the previous generation Core i7-5960X will come to mind, in this case it is more difficult to find, besides the price is even higher than 1187 euros.
We already see that no matter how much effort we put into opting for the AMD Ryzen 7 1700 it allows us to build a much more complete team than in the case of opting for Intel, in addition to being clearly cheaper.

Once we are clear that opting for AMD provides us with a much more complete team it is time to check how it behaves in the most demanding situations. For this we use the tests they have done at PCWorld comparing the Ryzen 7 1700 and the Core i7-5960X with the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in 4K resolution.
The games used have been the following:
- The Division Far Cry Primal Rise of the Tomb Raider Ashes of the Singularity
Data analysis and final words
If we analyze the results we see that in The Division and Far Cry Primal both processors offer equivalent performance, however in Ashes of the Singularity and Rise of the Tomb Raider the Core i7-5960X offers us some valuable FPS more.
There has already been talk of AMD Ryzen 7's "poor" performance in gaming, AMD itself has already spoken out to ensure they are working with studios to optimize games for the Zen microarchitecture and that new processors can perform at their best.. Let's also not forget about the bugs that Windows 10 presents related to SMT technology and the cache and the problems with the current memories certified only for Intel XMP and not for AMD AMP DDR4. Once these problems have been solved and with more mature BIOSes, it is expected that Ryzen's performance will only improve.
We recommend reading the best processors on the market.
Be that as it may, it has once again been shown that Intel is superior to Ryzen in gaming, even the Haswell generation (Core i7-5960X). However, it is also fair to say that AMD allows us to mount a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti for even less money than if we opted for an eight-core Intel processor. With the latter, there is no doubt that AMD Ryzen 7 has been a tremendous step forward for the most demanding users who want an eight-core processor but who have too limited a budget to meet Intel's demands.
