Amd ryzen 7 3800x review in Spanish (full analysis)

Table of contents:

Anonim

We only had to try the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X and it finally came to us. The most powerful version of the Ryzen 7 range with 8 cores and 16 threads at 4.5 GHz promises to be an ideal option to replace the Intel 9900K in enthusiastic level gaming equipment and especially multitasking and rendering.

After the release of these Zen 2 many analyzes, news and updates to improve those clock frequencies, let's see how this 3800X is today, with the AGESA 1.0.0.3 ABBA BIOS in the Crosshair Hero of Asus.

And before we continue, we thank AMD for their trust in us by transferring this CPU to us for analysis.

AMD Ryzen 7 3800X technical features

Unboxing

Finally this AMD Ryzen 7 3800X has arrived , the powered version of the Ryzen 7 3700X that has come to us with a presentation similar to that of the rest of its range brothers except the 3900X. In short, a finite flexible cardboard box, all printed in the brand's colors, with the Ryzen 7 badge and a photo of the Wraith Prism heatsink on the outside. I think this time a rigid cardboard box like the 3900X would have been more in line with the cost of this CPU.

In any case, we always have the exposed side showing the CPU inserted in a consistent closed plastic mold next to the heatsink, also in its own cardboard box. It is not what provides greater security against transport, but it is not that it is dangerous for the integrity of the CPU.

In this way the bundle includes the following:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 3800X processor AMD Wraith Prism heatsink 2x RGB cables and fan power Documentation with instructions and warranty

Precisely the same as the top version with the RGB heatsink as the maximum performance from AMD, which is very good news.

Exterior and encapsulated design

Only the powerful 16-core 3950X remains to be seen, which is still resisting seeing the light. Saving the distances, we have this AMD Ryzen 7 3800X that comes to be the substitute for the Ryzen 7 2700X of the previous generation, while the 3700X would be like the 2700. A CPU with outstanding performance as we will see later, although still far from the 3900X and very very close to the 3700X. These new CPUs have proven to have an excellent IPC with their 7nm FinFET transistors and excellent power consumption.

Regarding the exterior design, we have absolutely nothing new about its brothers. Then we will see that inside we will also have the 3 CCX, so the aluminum and copper IHS is directly welded to the DIE (STIM) so that the heat transport is done in the most efficient way possible. Something that is maintained throughout the series, and this fixed solution has already been chosen for the 3200X and 3400X APUs, instead of using thermal paste.

On the other hand, we have a dense array of gold-plated PGA contacts that will be connected to AMD's AM4 socket, which looks like it will stay longer between us. This is excellent news regarding the compatibility with previous generations, since in the same socket we can install Zen + and Zen 2. Also Zen, although in the new X570 boards it is not possible to do so, while in the X470 ones it is. We hope this continues at least until Zen 3.

Heatsink design

Something that also stands out positively in these included processors, the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X is the heatsink. Such a powerful CPU needs a heatsink with remarkable / outstanding performance, and so is this Wraith Prism, the brand's highest-performance version for its Ryzen.

This heatsink has a single tower configuration, although it has two levels if you can tell. In the first one, we have installed the cold block, which is entirely of good quality copper with four heatpipes that will make direct contact with the IHS of the CPU. The block has more than enough extension for all the encapsulation, although it is true that the surface is not completely flat, there being small indentations between the heat pipes that must be filled with the thermal paste that it includes.

As we can see, AMD has not skimped on thermal paste, noting in the image a considerable thickness of it that surely, a lot of it will be left over. It is a compound whose thermal conductivity we do not know, but since it is based on metals, it should be around 6-10 Wm / K

The next block is directly above and is larger, also with a dense finned that will be bathed by a 92mm diameter fan that includes RGB lighting and PWM control. In addition to the fan, the outer ring that serves as protection also includes a ring of LEDs that can be synchronized with the lighting technology of a compatible motherboard. For this, 4-pin RGB headers are included in the bundle.

Benefits

Now we continue with the detailed specifications of this processor, which will help us to differentiate it better with the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X. We will not give a report as detailed as in the case of the Ryzen 9 3900X, in which we already have almost all the news that this new Zen 2 architecture brings, so stop by its review.

This time we have a processor with a configuration of 8 cores and 16 processing threads. In its construction , 7 nm FinFET transistors manufactured by TSMC have been used , which are the ones that make up the Zen 2 architecture. And like all the other CPUs, it also has AMD SMT multithreading technology and the unlocked multiplier with overclocking capacity.. Although of course, this would be possible if it at least reached the maximum promised frequency, which even today does not seem to be possible despite constant BIOS updates.

Focusing more on the power of these 8 cores, they are capable of reaching a speed of 3.9 GHz at their base frequency, and 4.5 GHz at their theoretical maximum frequency. Recall that the 3700X has a slightly lower frequency, 3.6 and 4.4 GHz respectively, All this will be done thanks to AMD Precision Boost Overdrive technology that will manage the CPU voltage to raise the frequency only when necessary. It will be important to know that these processors are based on chiplets, which are basically 8-core modules with cache memory (CCX) in which the manufacturer deactivates or activates the operating cores of each model. In this 3800X we have 8 cores, of which 4 belong to CCX1 and another 4 to CCX2, thus dividing the activity between both silicons.

In each of these CCX we also have cache memory, in fact, in this model we have a total of 32 MB of L3 cache and 4 MB of L2 cache, being 512 KB for each of the physical cores. Finally, another important fact will be the TDP of the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X which stands at about 105W, compared to 65W of the 3700X, which is a strong increase in order to take into account a future overclocking and acquire a heatsink or liquid cooling at the height. For now, we already say that it is not necessary.

The third chiplet that we find inside the processor, belongs to the memory controller, which is built in 12nm transistors by Global Foundries. Now it supports 128 GB DDR4 at 3200 MHz in Dual Channel configuration natively, although of course the maximum JEDEC profile will be determined by the motherboard in question, being able to be up to 4800 MHz. This CPU is compatible with both previous generation motherboards, with the AMD B450 and X470 chipsets, and with the new generation with the X570 chipset. In fact, the processor has native support for the PCIe 4.0 bus, something we've already tried extensively and with new NVMe SSDs with identical compatibility.

Test bench and performance test

We now turn to see the corresponding test battery for this AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, thus seeing its behavior in front of its brothers, and what has been our "silicon lottery".

We have chosen the same board that we use with the 3900X, although we have slightly modified the memories for another model, and the power supply. Similarly, the BIOS we have used is the latest version available, AGESA 1.0.0.3 ABBA, which is supposed to improve the CPU frequency limit.

To check the stability of AMD Ryzen 7 3800X processor in stock values. The motherboard we have stressed with Prime 95 Large and air cooling with its heatsink as standard. The graph that we have used is an Nvidia RTX 2060 in its reference version, without further delay, let's see the results obtained in our tests.

Overclocking and maximum frequency

The unit that we have touched the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X has reached a maximum of 4, 254 GHz, while its limit was at 4.5 GHz, reason to understand that these registers should be somewhat higher. In any case, we had a similar limitation on the 3700X and the rest of the Ryzen processors, so clearly we are not seeing its full potential.

Obviously we cannot talk about overclocking until we reach the maximum admissible speeds, being a pending subject of this platform. There is also no point in manually uploading them in the BIOS, since we get beautiful blue screens or restarts in Windows.

Benchmarks (Synthetic tests)

We have tested performance with the enthusiastic platform and typical benchmark tests we always choose. Let's see if it exceeds the 3700X despite still having a palpable limitation in its frequency.

  • Cinebench R15 (CPU Score).Cinebench R20 (CPU Score).3DMARK Fire Strike and Time Spy.VRMARKPCMark 8Blender RobotWPrime 32M

In almost all the results we see minimal differences with the 3700X, which invites us to think that it is the result of that limitation in the frequency that we have today.

And perhaps what strikes us the most are the low records obtained in the speed test of RAM memories, especially at its stock speed of 2133 MHz, much lower than the rest of the CPU. Looking for answers, we've tested the Royal 3600s in stock and exactly the same thing happens. In any case, the values at 3600 MHz are as expected.

Game testing

Similarly, we have tested this AMD Ryzen 7 3800X with the 6 games that we have been using for some time, in order to have a reference with the rest of the analyzed models. There is a huge list of IPs, and that is impossible to test or buy them all. Extrapolate these results and the performance steps between CPUs to see more or less how it would behave with a certain game. This is the graphic configuration used

  • Shadow of the Tomb Rider, Alto, TAA + Anisotropico x4, DirectX 12 Far Cry 5, Alto, TAA, DirectX 12 DOOM, Ultra, TAA, Open GL 4.5 Final Fantasy XV, standard, TAA, DirectX 12 Deus EX Mankind Divided, Alto, Anisotropic x4, DirectX 12 Metro Exodus, High, Anisotropic x16, DirectX 12 (without RT)

As expected, this 8-core processor gives us spectacular records in most of the titles we have tried, ranking at the top of the list. Especially in 1080p its cores and IPC make the differences, since at lower resolutions the performance of a CPU is more important.

Consumption and temperature

The stress process to which we have subjected the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X has been 12 uninterrupted hours, whose temperatures have been monitored by HWiNFO. Likewise, the consumption obtained has been with the complete set both at rest and with GPU + CPU under stress with Prime95 and Furmark.

The temperatures we have obtained are quite good if we take into account that the stress process has lasted about 12 hours with Prime95 in Large mode. The 8 cores constantly working at approximately 4.2 GHz, with an ambient temperature of 24 ⁰C, have given us an average of 64 ⁰C and some eventual peaks at around 78⁰C. At rest the constant of other Ryzen remains, with somewhat elevated temperatures hovering around 40-45⁰C at all times.

Regarding consumption, since the 7 nm show their energy efficiency with fairly low consumption both at rest and in the process of charging. To this we add an RTX 2060 that is also highly optimized in this regard. With this we do not say that with a 400W power supply it is enough, we better go to figures above 600-650W for greater security.

Final words and conclusion about AMD Ryzen 7 3800X

We conclude with this review of the AMD Ryzen 7 3800X, a CPU at least outstanding in almost all its performance records. An 8-core, 16-thread processor with 32MB of L3 cache which is basically a substitute for the 2700X which in the previous generation was best in class.

We see from the results of the benchmarks that it is competing from you to you with its younger brother, the 3700X that even in some cases yields almost identical results. Especially in the PCMark 8 simulation we have seen a very high score, and very good records in the gaming section and with values that do not place it in a clear position compared to the rest of the Ryzen 3000 CPU.

We recommend reading the best processors on the market

Even with the AGESA 1.0.0.3 update we have not reached the maximum frequencies of 4.5 GHz that the manufacturer promises. Of course it will be impossible to overclock just yet, and we will have to rely on Precision Boost Overdrive to manage the frequency in the best possible way. We hope to see its maximum capacity soon, since for that we are going to spend the money.

Another positive and obvious aspect is using the Wraith Prism heatsink, which although it has not changed its design, is still as good as ever. Those terrific temperatures under prolonged stress of 64 ⁰C bring it down

It is currently for sale than most computer stores, at a price of approximately 410 euros. Without a doubt, one of the alternative series for both gaming, rendering and even virtualization. Although it is true that for games a 6C / 12T will be the smartest acquisition. An extremely versatile CPU for all tasks and at a fairly good price for what it offers.
