As many of you know, the serial processor cannot exceed 4100 - 4200 MHz in any of its cores. We have forced all its cores to work at 4.3 GHz in all its cores with 1.42v, we still think that it is somewhat high, but with a good liquid we can keep it at stable temperatures.
We have seen a considerable increase in our tests with Fire Strike and Cinebench R15 and R20 . The truth is that the best is worth it on paper and if you get a good chip, we can have a good performance bonus.

Little by little AMD is gaining ground in PC Gaming, high performance and workstation configurations. The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X comes to the market with unique characteristics: 16 cores, 32 logical threads, 64 MB of L3 cache and a base 3.5 GHz frequency and a theoretical 4.7 GHz frequency , although we will talk about this topic during the analysis.
Ready to see the new king of CPUs on the market? Let's start!
We thank AMD for the trust placed in leaving us the sample for analysis.
AMD Ryzen 9 3950X technical features
Unboxing
After the great success with the AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 7 3600 / 3600X we present to you the incredible AMD Ryzen 9 3900X. AMD opts for a presentation of 10 and very sober.
This 3950X arrives in a thick solid cardboard box in a rectangular rather than a square format. Its opening is very simple, since we simply slide up and we will have access to the processor. The decoration of the box you already have on display, it is clearly seen that we have a Ryzen in our hands with a huge logo on gray gradient colors.
In the rear area we have the main technical characteristics and a sticker that warns us that it is a sample and its sale is prohibited. As many of you already know, it is quite difficult to get one right now. Surely until 2020 we will not see more units.
Once we opened the box, we found a plastic blister that houses the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X processor, a sticker with the Ryzen 9 logo, an instruction manual and a small AMD documentation.
We miss the incorporation of a heatsink in this bundle. As you will see in our stock tests, the AMD Wraith Prism is more than enough for factory settings. When we want to overclock, we have to opt for third-party solutions . We believe that AMD understands that whoever buys this processor will mount a high-end Noctua-style or liquid AIO heatsink.
Exterior and encapsulated design
The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is the latest processor to be released from this third generation of AMD Zen 2 Ryzen family processors. AMD has evolved dramatically over the years with its CPUs. In 2017 we saw a really good improvement with their first first generation Ryzen, in 2018 a very interesting refinement and in this third generation they are on the same level as Intel with the Ryzen 3000 series.
As we have already discussed, the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is based on 7nm FinFET cores and incorporates an Infinity Fabric bus that is responsible for managing operations between processor and memory. For those who don't know, this processor is compatible with a wide variety of motherboards from the AM4 socket, but being the most powerful, it also needs the motherboard to be high-end. This information is very important… because not all the power phases will be able to support your demand for 105W of TDP.
AMD continues to opt for gold plating on all of its pins and pin 0 marking for smooth mounting. This model incorporates 16 physical cores, 32 threads of execution, a total of 64 MB of L3 cache, 8 MB of L2 cache and 1 MB in L1 cache.
THE AMD Ryzen 9 3950X It is the only AMD Ryzen 3000 that uses 100% of its two chiplets!
We have a base speed of 3.5 GHz and that with the turbo goes up to a theoretical 4.7 GHz. We believe that AMD is wrong again and should have put the speed that goes up to maximum: 4.1 GHz, which is what marks our monitoring applications .
Can we overclock with the processor? Yes, it has the multiplier unlocked, but we already warned that the rise will not be very large. But it is important to know that there is no restriction on the part of the manufacturer. In addition, it is very useful to use your Ryzen Master Tools application to extract all the juice and then pass the values to our BIOS.
This new generation of processors supports a total of 128 GB of DDR4 RAM as standard at a base speed of 3200 MHz, double what the Intel 9000-K series offers. Can we boot memories at faster speeds? In the end it will depend on our X570 motherboard, but yes, we can reach up to 4400 MHz by activating the AMP profile and slightly touching the voltage.
Unlike Intel, AMD chooses to drop the IHS and DIE. In this way we can dissipate heat without any problem with our high-end heatsink or liquid cooling. Keep in mind that a 16-core processor like this will generate enough heat, so it is very important to acquire a good thermal solution.
Another of the qualities to consider is the incorporation of the PCI Express 4.0 BUS and the compatibility with high-performance M.2 NVME Gen4 SSDs with vertigo read and write rates. For example, the MP600 offers us 4950 MB / s of reading and 4250 MB / s of writing. What a barbarian!

To check the stability of the AMD Ryzen 9 3950X processor in stock values we have used an AMD Wraith Prism 2 heatsink that we have from the test bench and a high-end X570 motherboard. We have decided to stress the processor with our classic Prime 95 Custom. While the graphics we have used is an Nvidia RTX 2060 in its reference version (Founders Edition). Without further ado, let's look at the results obtained in our tests.
Benchmarks (Synthetic tests)

AMD Ryzen 9 3950X temperature and consumption
* Tests with ASUS ROG Ryujin 360mm
Keep in mind that it is in all tests without overclock with the stock sink, while when we overclocked we had to mount an ASUS ROG Ryujin 360 mm. The temperatures at rest are somewhat high, 40 ºC but it must be taken into account that there are 16 physical and 32 logical processors. Full temperatures are very good, with an average 66ºC with Prime95 in Large mode for 12 hours.
When we overclock and with thermal enhancement (RL ASUS) we get better results than stock.
Many users wonder if the i9-9980xe is better than this processor, although in performance they are very similar in some situations, in consumption the performance of the 3950X is beastly. We have 115W at rest and 344 at maximum power. It is a processor wonder. A highly recommended purchase.
Final words and conclusion about AMD Ryzen 9 3950X
The AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is the best home processor we've tested to date. Its 16 physical cores, 32 logical cores, 64 MB of L3 cache, compatibility with AM4 boards, we have fallen in love and we see it ideal for an enthusiastic new PC configuration.
In our synthetic tests we have obtained a spectacular performance. It is behind the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3960X that we analyzed very recently, but it is normal, since it incorporates more cores and is above in many scenarios of the i9-10980XE that costs two euros more.
Is this AMD Ryzen 3950X really worth it? We can answer with a resounding YES, if you stream, you need many cores to work or you want to play a good time at 4K, it is a perfect option. Don't be afraid, it is a 100% safe option.
We recommend reading the best processors on the market
Although in the gaming section it is not its strongest point, it defends itself very well. For these uses the 3900X or 3600X is a much more recommended option. We believe the 3950X is one of the best purchases you can make today.
Regarding the overclock we have managed to raise it to 4, 300 Mhz with a voltage of 1.42v in the Asus X570 Crosshair Formula. We think we could have lowered it to less than 1.4v, but it was a matter of refining the profile. The increase in performance is significant, since playing we notice better minimums and in benchmarks we gain a good extra performance. Mind you, we need a good heatsink.
One of its most negative points is its low availability. Very few units have arrived in Spain, and the few have been sold in a matter of minutes. Its price is approximately 825 euros, somewhat far from AMD's recommended $ 799. What do you think of this Ryzen 9 3950X? Did you expect this performance or were you disappointed? Do you already have yours? Your opinion matters a lot to us!
