AMD intends to continue expanding the success of its new Ryzen processors with the launch of the second generation of Threadripper 2, models that will benefit from the same innovations and improvements as the Ryzen 2000.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2 improvements and new features

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2000 series of processors is set to launch in August alongside new TR4 socket motherboards. Although unofficial, some reports indicate that the X399 chipset could get an X499 replacement, while many other reports indicate that Threadripper 2 will see the release of a new set of motherboards with the current X399 chipset. It has even been speculated that the M-ATX format could get much more prominence ahead of the arrival of these new processors.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2 will use the 12nm Zen + architecture that we have seen with the Ryzen 2000 series. This means that the operating frequencies should be up to 300 MHz higher than the first generation Threadripper. If the second generation Ryzen is an indication, we can expect a Ryzen Threadripper 2950X to reach a base clock of 3.7 GHz + and a turbo of approximately 4.35 GHz. This should help improve performance along with the L1, L2, and L3 cache latency enhancements introduced by Zen +. Overall, we can expect a 10% performance improvement over first-generation Threadrippers.

Zen + also implies compatibility with significantly faster DDR4 RAM speeds thanks to an improvement in the memory controller. The second generation of Ryzen is capable of supporting DDR4 RAM with a speed almost 1GHz higher than its predecessor and the same can be expected with the second generation of Threadripper and the next update of the X399 motherboards.
