Amd and nvidia delay their new generation of gpus

Anonim

It seems that both Nvidia and AMD have decided to delay their new generation of GPUs due to delays and problems in the chip manufacturing processes at 20nm and 16nm, remember that they have been stuck at 28nm for 3 years.

Initially, both AMD and Nvidia were going to launch their GPUs at 20nm throughout 2014, but this could not be the case due to the problems and delays suffered by TSMC with this process, in addition to the strong demand for chips at 20nm. for mobile devices, something that has made it impossible for both GPU designers to access them.

Given this situation, Nvidia decided to manufacture its Maxwell GM204 GPUs with the 28nm process and now the company would have decided to forget about 20nm and wait to go directly from 28nm to 16nm, a transition that would take place at the earliest in 2016. All this would mean the arrival of the GM200 or "Big Maxwell" chip with the current 28nm process throughout 2015.

For its part, AMD has been forced to delay the launch of its Radeon R300 series codenamed Caribbean Islands and Pirate Islands architecture, which will arrive with the 20nm process. These GPUs were supposed to arrive throughout the first quarter of 2015, but it seems that they will finally do so in the second quarter. In addition AMD has published that it will only use 20nm in its new high-end GPUs, so the rest of the members of the Caribbean Islands family will reach 28nm
