AMD has confirmed that silicon-level mitigations for the Specter vulnerability will come with the new Zen 2 architecture, which we won't see on the market until 2019.

Specter will be solved with Zen 2

A possible silicon-level solution had been pointed out in the second-generation Ryzen that will hit the market in March, but this has not been possible since its development was already well advanced when the Meltdown and Specter vulnerabilities were discovered. Lisa Su has taken the opportunity to remember that AMD processors are only susceptible to Specter, there is no trace of Meltdown in them.

Microsoft releases an emergency update for the Intel Specter bug

This means that it won't be until 2019 when AMD fixes the Specter vulnerability. Intel for its part has already said that this year we will see the first solutions at the silicon level, what we do not know is to what extent the problem will be solved since these processors should also be too advanced already to make profound changes at the architectural level.

“For Specter Variant 1 we continue to actively work with our ecosystem partners on mitigations, including operating system packages that have begun to be deployed. We still believe that Specter Variant 2 is difficult to exploit on AMD processors. However, we are implementing CPU microcode packages that, in combination with operating system patches, provide additional mitigation steps.

In the longer term, we've included changes to our future processor cores, starting with our Zen 2 design, to address even more possible Specter-like exploits. We continue to work closely with the industry on these vulnerabilities, and we are committed to protecting AMD users from these and other security threats as they arise. ”

Everything indicates that we are going to continue talking about Specter and Meltdown for a good season, we will be attentive to new details
