We continue to analyze the latest launches of the renowned Antec brand, and this time it's up to the High Current Gamer Bronze range of mid-range power supplies, specifically its 750W model.

This new bet would be a cheaper alternative to their HCG Gold, which we analyzed on our website a few months ago and that gave excellent results. With its 750W and 850W models, the HCG Bronze is clearly intended for high power needs. Intrigued about its quality? In this review you will meet her. Let's start!

We thank Antec for trusting us with this source for analysis.

Antec HCG750 Bronze Technical Specifications

External analysis

The front of the box reminds us of the other sources in Antec's High Current Gamer series, with an interesting summary of its characteristics.

At the rear, the benefits of the range are explained in more detail. Let's discuss them:

  • 80 Plus Bronze certified: this means that it will reach up to 89% efficiency when operating at 230V (Europe). We would have liked a somewhat higher efficiency, but the truth is that the values provided by Antec are quite decent. We also remember that the 80 Plus efficiency certificate does not have a direct influence on the quality of the source, but is one more factor to consider. Antec Guaranteed Continuous Power - This is important as it means the advertised 750Ws are completely real and the source is ready to deliver continuously for long periods of time. 135mm fan with double ball bearings. These bearings are very durable and used in extreme applications, but they have the disadvantage that they are usually noisier than usual. 100% top quality Japanese capacitors. 5 years warranty, fairly decent value and not negligible.

It is also worth mentioning that we are dealing with a completely modular source, so organizing your wiring should not be a problem.

Once we open the source box, which is decently protected by being surrounded by foam, we find everything necessary for its assembly and certain accessories. All the modular wiring is incorporated, as well as the power supply, screws, the user manual, as well as flanges and velcro strips to help us mount it.

The assembly will not be especially painful, since all the cables are flat, of a quality that we liked. They are quite flexible and comfortable to use, although the ATX cable is divided into several strips of flat wiring, making it somewhat messier than normal.

In any case, the absence of additional capacitors and their measured thickness are appreciated when assembling a device.

The number of connectors included in this source is as follows:

1x 24 pins

2x 8 (4 + 4) pin CPU

4x 8 (6 + 2) pin PCIe

9x SATA

4x Molex

1x Floppy

The number of PCIe, SATA and Molex connectors is adequate and it is about the expected in a source of this power and price. However, we have been very pleasantly surprised by the inclusion of 2 8-pin EPS, something that those who are going to mount a team on platforms such as high-consumption HEDTs (X299, X399) will deeply appreciate.

This is one of the few fonts in its range that includes 2 EPS, great!

We went to take a look at the outside of the fountain, and we found an aesthetic very similar to that of its sister Gold that we analyzed a few months ago. It is a design with personality but that does not risk too much, so it will be worth in practically any assembly.

We see the part of the modular connectors where we will only and exclusively connect the necessary cables. Fortunately, the system is well designed so we won't make a mistake connecting anything.

Having seen this, it is time to see what is inside this fountain…

Internal analisis

The manufacturer of this power supply is Taiwanese Andyson, capable of manufacturing products of all qualities, from the lowest to extremely sophisticated in-house designs of enviable quality. So our conclusion about the interior of this HCG Bronze will depend on the quality of the components used and not on who makes it.

As expected in an 80 Plus Bronze source, the topology used on the primary side is the so-called Double Forward, lower than the LLC used in other more efficient ones. On the secondary side, DC-DC is used, like all modern sources on the market, including those of the highest quality.

The primary filter consists of 4 Y capacitors, 2 X capacitors, and 2 inductors. Everything expected. To protect us from surges, it has a varistor or MOV. Also an NTC to reduce the impact of current spikes that occur when turning on the source.

Despite the fact that we had initially pointed it out, it seems that it does not have a relay. This component is used to support the NTC, and its use is recommended but not essential.

The two primary capacitors are Japanese, from the Hitachi brand, each being 470uF and 420V. When connected in parallel (like all Active PFC sources) they are, in total, 540uF, a good sizing for a 750W source.

On the secondary side, we also have 100% Japanese capacitors, from various ranges of Nippon Chemi-Con, Nichicon and Rubycon. These are components of great quality and durability.

Also noteworthy is the use of MosFETs from the German Infineon, the best on the market… These are very important components that are key to the durability of the source.

As you can see, the DC-DC converters are captained by the Anpec APW7160A PWM controller.

Regarding the protection system, a fairly acceptable Silicon Touch PS223 is used. Antec has implemented OCP (surely not on the 12V rail, like the overwhelming majority of single 12V rail sources), OVP, SIP, SCP, OPP, NLO, OTP.

The welding quality is more than decent, we have not found any controversial or especially improvable point. It's not the best we've ever seen, but it's perfectly safe and fits what you'd expect in a font of this range. Great ?

The fan used in this High Current Gamer Bronze is the Loon Yacht D14BH-12 which, as we said, makes use of double ball bearings. These are very durable, but unfortunately not the quietest. We will immediately comment on our impressions of their sound.

Test bench and performance tests

We have carried out tests to regulate the voltages, consumption and speed of the fan. To do this, we have been helped by the following team:

TESTING BENCH

Processor:

AMD Ryzen 7 1700 (OC)

Base plate:

MSI X370 Xpower Gaming Titanium.

Memory:

16GB DDR4

Heatsink

-

HDD

Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

Seagate Barracuda HDD

Graphic card

Sapphire R9 380X

Reference Power Supply

Bitfenix Whisper 450W

The measurement of voltages is real, since it is not extracted from Software but from a UNI-T UT210E multimeter. For consumption we have a Brennenstuhl meter and a laser tachometer for fan speed.

Test scenarios

The tests are divided into several scenarios, in order from lowest to highest consumption.

CPU load GPU charging Actual consumption (approx)
Scenario 1 None (at rest) ~ 70W
Scenario 2 Prime95 None ~ 160W
Scenario 3 None FurMark ~ 285W
Scenario 4 Prime95 FurMark ~ 440W

The fan speed tests are performed with an overclock at 1.31V, while the consumption tests are done at 1.4125V, exceeding 450W of actual consumption at maximum load.

In order to maintain the reliability of the tests, especially the consumer one (the most sensitive), and taking into account the changing nature of the loads on a device, the sources shown here have been tested the same day and in the same situations, so we always retest the source that we use as a reference, so that the results are comparable within the same review. Between different reviews there may be variations due to this.

In addition, we try to put more and more stress on power supplies, so from one review to another the components used and the overclock applied may vary.

Voltages

We have not found any problems in the voltages of this source. All perfect.

Consumption

As you can see, the consumption is slightly higher than that of other sources that we have tested, confirming that we are dealing with an 80 Plus Bronze model ( the other “Bronze” that we use as a reference actually reaches Silver levels ). This has no direct implications on quality, but is just one more factor to consider when choosing a power source. We believe that, for the price range in which it is located, the efficiency is somewhat lower than expected.

Fan speed

The fan on this HCG Bronze is subtly audible at low loads.

The source fan profile starts at about 800rpm, which, for a fan of this diameter with double ball bearings, is slightly elevated. Due to these two characteristics that we discussed, the noise generated is greater than in the case of a 120mm fan with a quieter bearing, at the same revolutions.

Therefore, those users who are more demanding with silence could clearly distinguish the noise generated by this HCG750 Bronze, especially at low loads. In stressful situations, the PSU will most likely not be the protagonist in loudness, since in our tests the fan remained at practically the same revolutions as at the beginning in different scenarios.

Bronze efficiency implies that there is a greater amount of heat to dissipate, so it is normal for sources with this efficiency to be somewhat noisier than normal.

It is time to recap…

Final words and conclusion about Antec HCG750 Bronze

Antec continues to demonstrate that it wants a catalog of power supplies where none is lacking in quality. In this case, we have found a great work by Andyson that, although it does err a little in efficiency, makes use of the highest quality components such as the highest quality Japanese capacitors and MOSFETs Infineon.

In regards to the external aspects, the 100% modular cabling system is very well managed, the flat cables are very comfortable to use, and two 8-pin EPS connectors are used, something very necessary in some maximum configurations. performance and reminds us of superior ranges.

However, to the improvable efficiency is added a noise at rest somewhat worse than expected, since from the beginning the fan with double bag bearings is noted in a subtle way but that will annoy demanding users.

We recommend reading our guide to the best sources for PC

We can find this power supply at a price of approximately 95 euros. We believe that it is a high price since it costs approximately the same as the Antec EAG Pro and a little less than the Antec HCG Gold, both being of higher internal quality and features, with the exception that the EAG Pro is semi-modular.
