Without any announcement on their part, Apple has corrected an error that was present in iOS 11. This bug caused devices configured in the China region to fail when the word “Taiwan” was entered in the text field or when it was He used the Taiwan emoji, as one security expert explained.

Taiwan will no longer cause your iPhone to fail

Digita Security's Patrick Wardle described how the flaw in iOS 11.3 caused instant crashes in a variety of both native and third-party apps on either the iPhone or iPad. Such applications include Apple's own Messages, Facebook and WhatsApp.

Wardle explained that while some aspects of the bug were unclear, his investigations found that a "null" code would cause the crash when the system proceeded to verify the device's language / region settings.

Apparently, the failure comes from Apple, since iOS contains a code that hides the emojis of the Taiwanese flag on devices installed in China.

After Wardle informed the company, Apple fixed the problem in iOS 11.4.1 however, the coming-out of the light of this flaw highlights Apple's predisposition to please China when it comes to sensitive political issues. And, despite the fact that Taiwan is officially recognized as a completely independent democracy from China, the Asian giant has long considered that Taiwan is under its sovereignty.

Already in the past Apple has acted in a similar direction in order to protect the important Chinese market. In July 2017, it removed many VPN apps from the App Store in China, following previously approved rules that require such apps to be authorized by the Chinese government. In December 2016, the company removed the English and Chinese versions of The New York Times app from the Chinese App Store.
