Unboxing and design

This ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 is ASRock's most ambitious creation in terms of enthusiastic gaming platforms with AMD Ryzen Threadripper. A very high-level plate deserves a presentation that is consistent, and it is, thanks to a large cardboard box of great thickness and an impressive color silkscreen in which gray, white and gaming red predominate.

After carefully opening the box we find this phenomenal motherboard inside a thick anti - static bag for its isolation from the outside and static electricity. In turn, a cardboard mold separates it from the rest of the accessories included in this plate and which are not a few:

  • ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 motherboard 4 SATA data cables 1 ASRock SLI_HB_Bridge_2S cable Screws for fixing M.2 units Support for Wi-Fi The corresponding installation guide, CD and plate for rear ports

The aesthetics of this board is an extension of the one that shows its packaging, with the predominance of matte black color and sharp lines in white and red tones, giving a very gaming aspect to this board with an ATX format of 305 mm high by 244 mm wide. This is very positive since we will not need an E-ATX chassis to install this board.

Threadrippers need food and for this this ASRock implements an 8 phase VRM power supply with 60A Digi Power Shock to provide high quality voltage. The presence of Dr-MOS technology is responsible for monitoring the current and temperature of each phase to provide an optimized energy flow with great overclocking capacity. The section is completed with combination capacitors of 820 µF and 100 µF to stabilize the energy peaks and provide a response as flat as possible. To power this powerful VRM we have a 24-pin ATX connector together with two 8-pin EPS connectors each.

To provide correct protection and heat dissipation, this ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 has two finned aluminum alloy heatsinks joined by a Heat Pipe to collect and distribute the temperature gradient in the best possible way. The finish of these blocks is brushed aluminum and a black colored layer.

We also have a similarly finished aluminum heatsink for our friend the X399 chipset. In all the periphery of it, we will have an ASRock Polychrome RGB Sync LED lighting system that we can manage from time to time in color and effects from the brand's software. In addition, the board itself features two RGB LED headers and one addressable LED lighting header.

It is worth knowing a little more about the construction of the component PCB. ASRock has used an 8-layer design to generate the necessary electrical pathways, which in turn will be separated by high-density glass fabric combined with epoxy resin that will protect it from short circuits and adverse conditions of humidity and high temperatures.

ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 has, as a good X399 motherboard, eight Quad Channel capable DIMM slots to squeeze out all the possibilities of AMD monsters. On paper, these modules support a maximum of 128 GB of 3400 MHz ECC and non-ECC DDR4 RAM. AMD claims that the memory capacity of its Threadrippers will only be limited by the density and capacity of these DIMMs, so will we see 256 GB soon on any board? In any case, this is what there is currently.

We turn to see the three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slots fully reinforced with steel sheets and without LED lighting. The good thing that there are only three slots, is that in this case all three will work with their 16 corresponding lanes, thus configuring configurations of 16, 16/16 and 16/16/16, perfect work here for ASRock. And this will serve to connect no less than 3 graphics cards in 3-way Nvidia SLI and 3-way AMD Crossfire configuration, as long as we have a significant sum of money.

The storage section of this ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 is also top notch, with 8 SATA III ports at 6 Gbps and up to three Ultra M.2 slots at 32 Gbps, the largest of them with an aluminum heatsink. These slots consist of one with capacity for 110mm size drives working in PCIe x4 and NVMe mode, and two other slots that support drives up to 80mm, one working in PCIe x4 NVMe and the other in PCIe and SATA 6 Gbps. All of them are compatible with the ASRock U.2 kit for units under this interface, but we do not physically have this connector on the board.

All enthusiastic gaming equipment must have a sound to match the circumstances, and in this case the board has a high-end system with the Realtek ALC1220 codec with Nichion Fine capacitors, Reality 3D technology to enable 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound and support for Creative Sound Blaster Cinema 5. Not everything, because we also have a 120 dB SNR DAC with differential amplifier and Premium NE5532 headphone amplifier for the front panel connector. We believe that it is sufficient for most users, although Realtek has superior variants.

In addition to the sound we also want a powerful network card, which allows us to play LAN games without LAG and at high speed. With the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 we can, since, in addition to the typical Intel I211AT Gigabit ethernet chip, we also have a 2.5 Gigabit ethernet link with the Dragon RTL8125AG chip compatible with the Phanton Gaming LAN software, to be able to adjust the width characteristics band. One thing we do miss, is Wi-Fi connectivity, something necessary in this type of boards of such high level. Not surprisingly, we also have an M.2 slot compatible with 2230 Wi-Fi chips.

Let's now see the rest of the ports and interaction buttons that this ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 offers us. To start, we have a transparent CMOS button and two others for turning the board on and off with an indicator LED. A TPM connector could not be missing for hardware authentication protection cards. As for connectivity for ventilation and liquid AIOS, we have 1 connector for CPU fan and one for AMD RGB CPU fan, plus 4 connectors for 4-pin fans with max 24W.

On the rear I / O panel we have a lot of variety. We do not have information about the management of the lanes of these ports, but we assume that the USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C and Type-A ports will be managed by the chipset and the rest of the USB ports will communicate directly with the CPU. In total we will have the following ports:

  • 8x USB 3.1 Gen11x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C1x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A1x PS / 2 for Mouse and Keyboard 2x RJ45 for LAN 1 and LAN 21x S / PDIF5x Audio and Micro Jack

BIOS

Again ASRock surprises us with a very solid, quality BIOS that does not have as many parameters as others. It allows us to overclock very well with a few clicks, we can monitor every element of our computer, update the BIOS via the internet without having to start the operating system or create different profiles.

Today it is very difficult to find a stable BIOS that works as well as ASRock for AMD Threadripper processors. We must applaud the good work that each generation of the company is doing.

Overclocking and temperatures

Although this motherboard is not a top of the range MSI, we have been able to get the 4.25 GHz stable 24/7 with a voltage of 1.43 v with a 16-core 32-wire processor. We find it a super interesting option for those users who are looking for quality / price.

The marked temperatures are during 12 hours of stress with the processor in stock and PRIME95 in its long stress program. The zone of the feeding phases reaches up to 92 ºC. This time we understand that the temperatures are these, since it is feeding a real beast, it would be necessary to check how other brands have the cooling capacity in the VRM area.

Final words and conclusion about ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6

ASRock is back to making a high quality motherboard, the ASRock X399 Phantom Gaming 6 is designed for the new 2nd generation AMD Threadripper processors, supporting 128GB of 3400MHz DDR4 RAM, overclocking processors with more than 16 cores Physical, M.2 connectivity, and dissipation that does its job very well.

We recommend reading the best motherboards on the market

At the performance level we have been able to put our AMD Threadripper 2950X up to 4.25 GHz in all its cores with a voltage of 1.43v. We have been able to edit video samples in 4K, play any game in full HD, 2K and 4K without any problem.

We miss a Wifi connection and greater dissipation in the M.2 NVME slots, since only one of them incorporates a small heatsink. We liked that the sound card fulfills its objective very well and we have a 2.5 Gigabit connection signed by Dragon RTL8125AG.

Its price currently in online stores is 302 euros. We believe it is one of the best quality / price TR4 boards currently on the market. Good job!
