AMD went through Computex 2018 giving a blow on the table with its second generation Ryzen Threadripper processors, which will offer users 32 cores and 64 processing threads, all while maintaining compatibility with current TR4 motherboards with X399 chipset. ASRock X399 Taichi has already received a BIOS update to add support for these powerful new processors.

ASRock X399 Taichi already supports 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper processors with up to 32 physical cores and 64 threads

This compatibility of second-generation Ryzen Threadrippers with older motherboards will test their VRM circuits, so surely not all boards are suitable for mounting the 32-core processor. ASRock has released its BIOS 3.0 for its ASRock X399 Taichi motherboard to support future AMD processors, a clear nod to the 2000 series Threadripper processors previously announced by AMD.

X399 Taichi requires two separate BIOS updates to prepare for second generation Threadripper products. The need for two BIOS updates also shows the changes ASRock needs to make to support second-generation Threadrippers, suggesting that there are several changes under the hood on ASRock X399 motherboards.

Second-generation R yzen Threadripper processors are expected to arrive in versions with 16, 24, and 32 cores under the names Ryzen Threadripper 2950X, 2970X, and 2990X. At this time, it is unknown whether or not a 12-core model is planned. AMD previously stated that first-generation Threadripper processors would continue on the market, suggesting that low-core variants will not be replaced soon.

What do you expect from the new 2nd generation Ryzen Threadripper processors?
