ASRock Z390 Taichi technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
The ASRock Z390 Taichi motherboard has arrived in a very colorful cardboard box, which points out all its virtues, which we will see throughout this analysis.
When we open the box we find the motherboard along with all the accessories. In total the bundle includes:
- ASRock Z390 Taichi Motherboard Quick Install Guide, Support CD, I / O Shield 4 x SATA Data Cables 1 x ASRock SLI_HB_Bridge_2S2 Card x ASRock WiFi 2.4 / 5 GHz Antennas 3 x M.2 Socket Screws
The overall look gives the impression that the ASRock Z390 Taichi is aimed at enthusiasts looking for a solid foundation not only for a very powerful multi-graphics card gaming system, but also combines a Realtek ALC1220 HD codec, two LAN ports with Intel Gigabit and good quality power delivery.
The new ASRock Z390 Taichi motherboard is an ATX-size offering aimed at enthusiasts looking to push the boundaries of their eighth and ninth generation Intel processors. This new ASRock Z390 Taichi follows a similar design to other Taichi brand models on the market, and takes visuals from both the Taichi Z370 and Taichi X470. Alongside the LGA 1151 socket for the processor, we find four slots for RAM that support up to 64 GB at a DDR4-4200 speed in dual channel configuration. Of course, there is no lack of compatibility with XMP profiles to get the most out of it in a very simple way.
The manufacturer has assembled a powerful 12-phase power VRM in total, which will ensure maximum processor stability even under the most demanding overclocking. This VRM is manufactured with high quality components, and it has XL aluminum heatsinks to avoid overheating, thanks to this you will not have any problems and the board will last you many years.
Among the main components of this VRM we highlight the following: Choke Premium 60A. Compared to traditional shocks, ASRock 60A power shocks make saturation current up to three times better, providing improved Vcore voltage.
- Premium Memory Alloy Choke: Designed specifically for memory power delivery, these new alloy shocks feature a highly magnetic, heat-resistant design, providing more stable and reliable power for the motherboard and modules. memory. Dual Stack MOSFET (DSM): The Dual Stack MOSFET (DSM) is another innovative MOSFET design from ASRock. The area of the silicone matrix is increased by stacking two matrices on a MOSFET. The larger the area of the die, the less Rds (activated) will be. Compared to traditional discrete MOSFET, DSM with a larger die area provides an extremely low Rds (on) of 1.2mΩ, making Vcore more efficient. Nichicon 12K Capacitors - These are 12K supreme black capacitors with a lifespan of at least 12, 000 hours. Compared to other high-end motherboard counterparts that simply have lifetimes of approximately 10, 000 hours, ASRock applied Nichicon 12K Black Caps that offer 20% longer lifespan and provide more stability and reliability.
The power supply consists of an Infineon IR35201 8-channel PWM controller with twelve Texas Instruments TI 87350D NEXFET power blocks. On the back of the PCB are six Infineon IR3598 benders that make up 5 + 1 of the channels in the PWM controller. Two additional Dual-F ON Semiconductor channel MOSFETs make up the rest of the power delivery, meaning the IR35201 is operating in a 5 + 2 configuration.
Detail of the 24-pin ATX, 8-pin EPS and 4-pin EPS connectors, more than enough to meet the needs of the Core i9 9900K, the most powerful processor that we can mount on this motherboard.
ASRock Z390 Taichi features dual Intel I219V and I211AT LAN interface , built-in 802.11ac Wi-Fi, and offers high quality Realtek ALC1220 HD audio codec with Texas Instruments NE5532 headphone amplifier for front panel. This way you can enjoy the best experience on the net, and the highest quality sound without having to spend more money.
On the bottom half of the motherboard, there are three full-length PCIe 3.0 x16 slots running at x16, x8, and x8 respectively. The three full-length PCIe 3.0 slots are coated with ASRock Slot Steel armor to easily support the weight of the largest and most powerful graphics cards on the market.
Thanks to these three slots we can mount Nvidia 2-way SLI and AMD 3-way CrossFireX configurations, obtaining sensational benefits in current 4K games. Below these three slots we find a pair of PCIe 3.0 x1 slots for expansion cards.
ASRock Z390 Taichi offers a multitude of storage options, including three M.2 slots that support both PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA drives and a total of eight SATA ports. Of these eight ports, six are provided from the Z390 chipset and the other two from an ASMedia 1061 controller.
We note that slot M2_1 shares bandwidth with two SATA ports, and M_2 shares bandwidth with SATA ports if using a SATA M.2 drive , and M2_3 shares bandwidth with two other ports.
M.2 slots feature a full coverage heat sink, which is capable of efficiently dissipating heat to ensure your high-speed M.2 SSD always performs at its best. Of course the motherboard supports Intel Optane and RAID 0, 1, and 10.
The aesthetic is enhanced by the RGB Polychrome LED lighting system. In addition to built-in RGB lighting, it also features built-in RGB headers and an addressable RGB header that allows the motherboard to connect to compatible LED devices like strips, CPU fans, coolers, chassis, etc.
Users can also sync RGB LED devices through Polychrome RGB Sync certified accessories to create their own unique lighting effects.
The rear panel offers us a large number of available connections, including three USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-A ports , a single USB 3.1 Gen2 Type-C and four USB 3.0 Type-A ports, as well as a DisplayPort 1.2 video output. and HDMI. Also included on the rear panel is a handy CMOS button, and a PS / 2 keyboard and mouse combo port. Also included on the rear panel is a set of antenna connectors for the integrated 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter.
BIOS
As soon as we enter the BIOS with the F2 or SUPR button we find a basic interface that specifies our entire system. To access the advanced options we have to press F6.
ASRock has returned to make a super complete BIOS that offers a multitude of options to adjust. In our case it can be seen in some of the screenshots that we were trying to make the processor stable at 5.1 GHz but we did not manage to leave it at that frequency for daily use.
It allows us to manually or offset overclock, create configuration profiles, configure the memories with the XMP profile, configure both the processor, chipset, storage and USB connections at will and many tools to take extreme control of the system.
We find it very interesting to update the BIOS via the internet or create a RAID with two clicks. And as expected we can also monitor the entire system and carry out an exhaustive control of temperatures and voltage of the system. Good job ASRock!

Overclocking and temperatures
We changed our way of doing the analysis on motherboards. We discarded in-game performance, which really offers the highest percentage performance on the graphics card, and decided to overclock tests. In our case we have been able to reach 5 GHz stable 24/7 with a voltage of 1.32v. It is not bad, since we do not have one of the best units of i9-9900k , and that is not exactly cheap.
The marked temperatures are during 12 hours of stress with the processor in stock and PRIME95 in its long stress program. The zone of the feeding phases reaches 75 to 85 ºC. What we can deduce that at the level of dissipation is "justita" to perform an extreme overclock. Mounted on a chassis with good air flow, temperatures would improve but we expected more cooling capacity?
Final words and conclusion about ASRock Z390 Taichi
The ASRock Z390 Taichi is a better motherboards that ASRock has released for the 9th generation 1151 socket from Intel. It supports up to 64GB of DDR4 memory, up to 2 Nvidia graphics cards in 2 Way SLI and passive dissipation for the M.2 connection.
At the performance level it is going very well and we have been able to play a wide variety of games. When we have overclocked at 5 GHz it has given us a plus with the 8 cores running at full power.
But not everything is good, we believe that the dissipation of the phases could be better. The temperatures reached in stock are too many, and ASRock has to improve in this regard. We have received more motherboards Z390 from the manufacturer, we will see how it performs with our 9900K.
Its store price ranges from 284 euros. A somewhat high price and there is a lot of competition. What do you think of the ASRock Z390 Taichi?
