Assassins Creed Odyssey has been officially released, but it appears that this latest Ubisoft open world game will not work on CPUs that do not support AVX. This basically means the game won't run at all if you're using an older Intel or AMD CPU that doesn't support it.

Assassins Creed Odyssey doesn't work on older CPUs like i7 920 or AMD Phenom

AVX (Advanced Vector Extensions) technology are extensions of the x86 instruction set architecture for microprocessors from Intel and AMD. The first CPUs that began to support AVX instructions are second-generation Intel Core Sandy Bridge processors and AMD Bulldozer processors.

Assassins Creed Odyssey will not work on processors:

  • Intel Core i3, i5, i7 of the first generation or earlier (Ex. I7 920, i7 960, etc.) Intel Pentium processors (Ex. G4560, G2030, etc.) AMD Phenom processors (ex. X6 1090T)

Other PC games began to ask for AVX instructions obligatorily in the last time, such as Monster Hunter World, like St e ep of Ubisoft and The Crew 2. The downside is that Ubisoft cannot release any patches to support older CPUs this time.

In its official forum, Ubisoft has stated that it currently has no plans to support CPUs that lack support for AVX extensions. This may reportedly be due to the inclusion of Denuvo technology, so it will be interesting to see if the game will run on such CPUs when - and if - it ever breaks. Unless Ubisoft updates the game to officially support these CPUs in a future patch.
