As always, we thank Asus for the trust placed in lending the product for analysis.
Asus Blue Cave technical characteristics
Unboxing and design
The Asus Blue Cave is presented inside a cardboard box that fits it perfectly to avoid damage during transport. The box has a colorful design and with the best quality printing, it shows us several high-resolution images, as well as all the most important features and specifications.
Once we open the box we see the router along with all the accessories. Asus attaches a Europe power adapter, a power supply and an Ethernet cable to connect the router to broadband.
Most WiFi routers are meant to be used out of sight, so there is not much interest in appearance. But with the Asus Blue Cave, the Taiwanese firm wants their router to be a product that the user can be proud of and boast of. Asus Blue Cave is more like a small mini speaker than a conventional router with a blue lighted hole in the center of the device. The back if it is more conventional, but after all is what you will not see normally.
The design is very clean with an LED-free front, except for the presence of a small power LED that stays blue when in use.
Despite its peculiar appearance, Asus Blue Cave is an incredible piece of hardware, with an AC2600 dual-band rating, consisting of one 5 GHz band at 1, 734 Mbits / sec and two 2.4 GHz bands that can reach up to 800Mbits / sec 2.4GHz 802.11n in TurboQAM mode, or 600Mbits / sec in regular mode. Added to this is an internal 4 × 4 antenna configuration , 128 MB of Flash memory and 512 MB of RAM, unfortunately, there is no information about the processor.
Asus Blue Cave is a Wi-Fi router designed to meet the demands of the most demanding users. The latest Intel chipset offers AC2600 dual-band Wi-Fi, designed for homes with lots of connected devices, providing a faster connection on congested networks. This device will offer seamless 4K UHD video streaming, lag-free gaming and fast file downloads
As for the wired connectivity of the Asus Blue Cave it lacks nothing significant. The device implements a four-port Gigabit Ethernet switch, plus a fifth Gigabit Ethernet port for broadband WAN connection. There is also a USB 3.0 port for printer storage and exchange, the WPS button. Asus claims this device is a smart home router, with support for Amazon Alexa wizard and IFTTT.
The built-in AiProtection feature with Trend Micro technology provides commercial-grade security for all connected devices, including IoT devices that generally have limited capacity in terms of security. This advanced technology protects home networks from attack by viruses and hackers by instantly detecting network packets, from malicious websites that can be threats, and even if an already infected device connects to Blue Cave, it blocks its connection to the malicious server. Best of all, AiProtection does not require a subscription fee, so you can enjoy comprehensive protection for the lifetime of this product.
Configuration and commissioning
When you turn on Asus Blue Cave for the first time, the browser will open a setup wizard asking you to set up a management login, as well as an SSID and password for your 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi. Next, the AsusBlue Cave will see if there is a firmware update available, and finally it will take you to the main administration interface.
Asus Blue Cave's main interface is essentially the same one used by Asus on all of its routers. The first option is to set up a WiFi network for guests, so you can keep visitor usage separate and change details regularly to maintain security.
The AiProtection section offers two main features: Network Protection and Parental Control. The first includes a system to scan the router for any settings that leave it vulnerable. You can block known malicious websites and enable bi-directional intrusion protection, as well as block infected devices.
Parental control lets you block certain websites and apps for individual clients, with presets for adult content, instant messaging, P2P file sharing, and streaming. You can also program access for each user, according to the hours of the day and the days of the week.
The AiCloud 2.0 system improves external access to a USB storage device, the storage can even be synchronized with a cloud storage repository.
The Wireless Connections section allows you to configure WiFi, including compatibility with RADIUS corporate password systems. There are WPS options available, and a WDS bridge mode.
We come to the promised features for the smart home. There are 11 Alexa commands the device will respond to, including things like activating the guest network and configuring rules such as sending an email when a particular user is detected on the network. Although this option is currently not available in Europe, until Amazon decides to market it in Europe.
Testing equipment
To make the performance measurements we will use the following components:
- 1 2T2R Client.Team 1, with Intel i219v network card.Team 2, with Killer E2500 network card.JPerf version 2.0.
Wireless Performance
In this case we are lucky to have a 2T2R client and we will be able to exploit this router to the best of its ability. It is an Atheros network card that we use in one of our high-performance notebooks.
The yields obtained have been the following:
- Router - Computer in the same room (face to face): 77 MB / s. Router - Equipment in Room at 15 meters with several walls: 43 MB / s.
Final words and conclusion about Asus Blue Cave
The Asus Blue Cave comes to market to meet the needs of almost any network enthusiast user. It is an ideal option to change the router of your operator with great power (AC2600) and unsurpassed aesthetics.
As we have been able to verify in our tests, the performance is over salient. Having the ability to have a wide variety of users connected to our wifi and even set up small parts (4 or 5 teams) playing with the wireless connection.
We recommend you read the best routers on the market
The firmware is identical to that of the Asus RT-ACXX series: Powerful, upgradeable and with unbeatable security . Although as a possible improvement, we miss the compatibility with AiMesh (Red MESH), which is the present and the future of home and small business networks.
Its price in online stores is 242 euros. Expensive price? We believe that if you are looking for aesthetics and power, you will hardly find a better router. But for this amount we can RT-AC88U with AC3100, but with a very aggressive aesthetic. What do you think of our review of the Asus Blue Cave?
