32 gigabyte DDR4 UDIMM RAM modules are a reality, as Samsung recently announced the development of one of these modules, using higher-density DRAM chips. Those chips, however, are unlikely to be available any time soon. Asus DDR4 DC aims to fix some RAM limitation issues.

In the midst of all this, Asus has designed its own non-JEDEC UDIMM standard, called the “Dual Capacity DIMM ” or DC DIMM, with G.Skill and Zadak designing the first models. The utility of these modules is to maximize the CPU memory controller limit despite having fewer memory slots on the motherboard. Possible use cases include LGA1151 mini-ITX motherboards with only one slot per memory channel, or certain LGA2066 motherboards with only four slots, one slot per channel.

There is no information on memory chip configuration, but it is very likely that they are dual-range. The first DDR4 DC modules could be 32GB, allowing the memory controller limit of Core 8th gen and 9th gen processors to be maximized with just two modules. Asus will heavily market this standard with its upcoming Z390 chipset-based motherboards, so it remains to be seen if other motherboards support the standard. Ironically, the module made by Zadak shown in Asus' marketing materials uses DRAM chips made by Samsung.
