Threadripper 2 or WX is falling. If everything goes as planned, on August 13 we can see the first processors of the second generation of Threadripper, with the expected debut of the 2950X 16-core and 32-wire, and a beastly 2990X 32-core and 64-wire. Since a new chipset will not come out for this generation, manufacturers have to adapt to the needs of this chip. Let's see how ASUS, Gigabyte and MSI have done it.

ASUS does not seem to present new boards, bets on refrigeration kits

Unlike what we will see in Gigabyte and MSI, ASUS does not present new boards prepared for this generation, but rather presents cooling kits for all the boards it already has on the market.

These kits will contain an additional fan and heatsink, in addition to all the necessary anchors, where the fan will improve the cooling of the VRMs and the heatsink of various third-party controllers and the chipset, to be able to stably power the new ones. beasts.

It will be necessary to see the results of using your current power system instead of updating to a new one forcing the change of board. In principle, it is seen that they trust their VRM enough.

Gigabyte Launches X399 Aorus Extreme

Like MSI, Gigabyte has decided to launch its highest-end motherboard for the new Threadripper 2 processors, rather than offering updates for its current motherboards. It will come with eight ruggedized memory slots, four PCIe x16 ports, 3 M.2 connectors with its own heatsink.

Regarding power, the VRM has 10 phases and we will have to make use of 2 8-pin EPS connectors and 1 6-pin PCIe from our power supply.

MSI relies on its new X399 Creation board

This board was already shown at Computex 2018, and in addition to its extremely aggressive design and the inclusion of an M.2 SSD expansion kit that looks like a graphics card, there is much more to comment on.

Power is provided in a 16 + 3 phase design, using 2 8-pin EPS connectors from our power supply. In this way, we more than guarantee that the board will be able to spare with the 250W of the Threadripper 2990X.

It is a board with good expansion possibilities with 8 SATA, up to 15 USB 3.1, 10 headers for PWM fans, 7 M.2 ports, 4 PCIe x16 slots, etc…

Availability of these motherboards

The ASUS kit will be available in the market together with Threadripper 2, they will be sold separately and we do not know their price. The Gigabyte plate will be available on August 8 for about $ 500. We don't know the exact availability of the MSI X399 Creation, but it would also appear around $ 500. What do you think of these releases? Who do you think has been the winner?
