We are continuing to review motherboards for the Intel Coffe Lake processors on the LGA 1151 (Z370) platform. On this occasion, it has been the Asus Maximus X Formula with its 10 power phases , characteristic armor, an RGB lighting system that removes hiccups and one of the best performances on the market.

Ready to discover everything you need about it? Don't miss our review!

We thank Asus for trusting the product for its analysis:

Asus Maximus X Formula technical characteristics

Unboxing and design

As in all Asus ROG series products we see a spectacular presentation in a full color box. On its cover we find the model printed with large letters and a great image of a high quality and the great variety of certificates, it is noted that we are dealing with a very high-end product and only available to the best manufacturers.

We now turn to the rear where we find all the most important technical features detailed in several languages including Spanish. Asus makes sure that users know what we are buying at all times.

Once we open the box we find the following bundle:

  • Asus Maximus X Formula motherboard. Instruction manual and quick guide. Installation kit for Intel processors. CD disk with drivers. SATA Cable Set. Screw to connect M.2 disk and its PCIe adapter. SLI HB ROG cable. WIFI antenna. ROG stickers and cup holders.

We now turn to look at the Asus Maximus X Formula, as we can see it is an ATX format motherboard that has dimensions of 30.5 cm x 24.4 cm. It includes a LGA 1151 socket along with an X370 chipset that makes it fully compatible with 8th generation Core processors, also known as Coffee Lake.

'Remember! Although it shares the LGA 1151 socket, the Z370 motherboards are not compatible with the sixth and seventh generation of Intel processors (or vice versa).

Surrounding the socket we find 4 DDR4 DIMM sockets compatible with up to 64 GB of DDR4 memory in dual channel configuration and with frequencies of up to 4000, of course, this motherboard is compatible with the XMP 2.0 profile so that we can squeeze the memories to the maximum with a couple of clicks.

Its back is the most spectacular that we can see on a motherboard, as usual in the Maximus series it has a TUF armor (so characteristic of the MARK series) to give more rigidity while protecting the delicate electronic components that they hide under it. There is no doubt that this is a motherboard made to last and last for many years.

The motherboard has advanced heatsinks in the area of the power phases and the Z370 chipset. We found a Digi + VRM consisting of no less than 10 power phases of the best quality and with SuperAlloy Power 2 components. This means that the stability of the electric current that reaches our processor will be much higher, allowing us to achieve higher levels of overclocking and performance.

Regarding the possibilities of the graphics system we see that they have been included: two PCI Express 3.0 x16 slots reinforced in steel to easily support the most powerful and heavy-duty graphics cards on the market. A PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot with x4 electrical operation has also been included, thanks to this we can mount Nvidia SLI 2-way and AMD CrossFireX 3-way multiGPU systems, which will give us a sensational level of performance in the most modern and demanding games.

We now turn to the audio section and see that it incorporates an 8-channel Realtek ALC1150 sound card along with SupremeFX ROG technology and the SupremeFX Shielding electromagnetic shield. Among its most interesting features is the compatibility with amplifiers for headphones and high impedance speakers and the Sonic Radar III and Sonic Studio III systems that will allow us to take full advantage of its features in all use scenarios.

As for the network, the Asus Maximus X Formula has two 10/100/1000 Gigabit LAN connections signed by the Intel I219V controller and the I211-AT, Bluetooth V4.2 and WiFi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac MU-MIMO compatible. In this way we make sure that we have a motherboard to surf the net at full speed and be able to use a multitude of peripherals wirelessly.

We come to the storage section, one of the most cared for in this Asus Maximus X Formula with the presence of two M.2 slots for 32Gb / s NVMe drives and six SATA III 6Gb / s ports for much more traditional hard drives, With this we will not lack storage and we will be able to perfectly combine the benefits of SSDs and traditional mechanical disks.

Asus takes great care of aesthetics, that is why this motherboard includes the advanced RGB Aura Sync LED lighting system, this is configurable by software in 16.8 million colors and multiple light effects, some of the most important are the following.

  • Static: Always on Breathing: Slow cycle on and off Strobe: Turns on and off Color cycle: Goes from one color to another Music effect: Responds to the rhythm of music CPU temperature: Changes the color according to the load of the CPU

Finally we see that its rear panel includes the following connections:

  • 1x DisplayPort1 x HDMI1 x RJ451 x Optical Out / PDIF5 x Audio Jack1 x Clear CMOS button1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 (red) Type A1 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 (black) Type C4 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 (blue) 4 x USB 2.01 x USB Flashback BIOS button 1 x ASUS 2 × 2 Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n / ac and Bluetooth v4.2 module

BIOS

We did not find any news regarding other Asus product BIOS. As in all, they are super complete, with great incredible overclocking capacity and a thousand options to modify. Personally, they are the best it offers on the market (they are updated very regularly), but they are also the most complex. If you want to start in it, we recommend that you use all the options and check the different guides that are in forums and websites.

Final words and conclusion about Asus Maximus X Formula

The Asus Maximus X Formula is an ATX format motherboard and has one of the best construction designs for the LGA 1151 platform. Among its benefits we have come across a TUF armor that offers stability and a better design, the fantastic RGB Aura lighting, the 8-channel SupremeFX sound card and a powerful wireless network card.

We recommend reading the best processors on the market

In our tests with a 4.8 GHz i7-8700K in all its cores, 6 4 GB of 3200 MHz RAM (activated from the XMP profile) and an Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti card we have had a great time playing. A great experience for 4K content or virtual reality.

Its price in stores is 340 euros, without a doubt it is not a cheap motherboard. But we believe that it is worth every euro that is invested in it. The Asus Formula series is one of our favorites, and every time we review a new review it doesn't disappoint. Great job!
