Following the barrage of news from the highly anticipated Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti, we are fortunate to be among the first to review this Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, a card with a Turing chip, but decaf from Ray Tracing and DLSS to tweak. plus prices is the current range and give mid-range players a chance. Will it be faster than the GTX 1070? You will check it out right now, so let's get started!

As always, we thank Asus for their trust in giving us this graphics card for analysis.

Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti technical features

And how could it be otherwise, we have a gala presentation for this card, it will be mid-range but its appearance is as good and aggressive as all Strix. We then have a colorful cardboard box with a photo of the card and the Asus logo making it clear that it has AURA Sync technology and is an overclocked version.

We rotate it, because that is where we will find the main novelties that the brand implements in its personalized models. Of course an improved triple fan heatsink and prepared for overclocking, VRM also more powerful, as well as dual BIOS and management through software.

When removing the card from its packaging, we will have to remove the cardboard cover and we will find another thick cardboard case and the card perfectly accommodated in it and protected by an antistatic bag. Also we will find the following elements:

  • Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Card Installation and User Guide Asus Software CD version V1447 Two Velcro straps to hold cables

We do not have any type of extra cable or anything similar, so we will have to use the one we have at home or some other that we have bought.

Well here we have our Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti fully unpacked, we see a product of a fairly large size, with 301 x 132 x 50 mm and occupying a space of 2.5 slots.

In the construction quality is appreciated, especially with that large heatsink and with a fairly dense fin distribution. For its part, the external cover is PVC plastic, instead of aluminum, something understandable in a product aimed at the mid-range.

Of the four versions that Asus will present on the market, this is the most powerful of all, as we already know in products with the STRIX badge. For this reason, a huge heatsink has been installed, equipped with three fans in axial configuration that provide optimized air flow when they start operating from 55 degrees.

With this design, the GPU's cooling is improved by up to 16%, keeping it at about 68 degrees in silent mode and with only 34.2 dB of noise, which is not bad for a team of three 100mm fans. Of course these will be customizable on a spin basis using the Asus GPU Tweak II software.

Its external appearance is completed with an aggressive Strix design, in this case made of plastic, but with RGB LED lighting with Asus AURA Sync technology perfectly customizable and synchronizable from the brand's software.

If we turn it around, we will see a generous backplate, and it will be the one that we will see if we put the card in its normal configuration on our computer. This backplate is entirely made of aluminum, and leaves four openings for the screws that fix the heatsink to the GPU. Thanks to it, the weight of the card will be supported in a better way so that the PCB does not deform.

Its design consists of a dark gray brushed and painted aluminum finish with serigraphy of the house brand and the logo and different from Asus STRIX. These elements do not have lighting.

In case we hadn't noticed in the previous photos, this Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has a small button on the top left with which we can interact to physically turn off the lighting of the card. To activate it we will press it again and everything will return to normal.

As a mere anecdote, the connection system of this card is through a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot, and as we know from the RTX 2060 version, we do not have a SLI or NVLink connector. Perhaps this makes less sense than in the 2060, installing it is also a mid-range and the possibility that a user of this type is interested in a dual card configuration is not contemplated.

Asus has chosen to provide connectivity of up to 4 screens with two HDMI 2.0b ports and another two DisplayPort 1.4, versions that will allow us to reproduce content in 4K without problems

And even up to 8K for the DisplayPort 1.4 version at 30 Hz if we choose to deactivate the DSC or up to 60 Hz if we activate it. Something that his superior sisters already have.

It is not everything, because on the front we also have two 4-pin headers to give us the possibility of connecting two chassis fans in it. With its PWM control the ventilation will become active and modify the speed of the fans depending on the temperature of the GPU or CPU. We will also be able to control it with the Asus Fan Connect utility available in the main Asus GPU Tweak II software, as we previously mentioned.

Asus contemplates the possibility of further overclocking or user modifications, so this card implement a double BIOS, so as to always have a stable version and another to work and do mischief.

Technical characteristics, features and PCB

Important element is this oversized, abundant finned heatsink built on an aluminum main block with a copper contact plate to collect all the heat from GPU and VRM. For the distribution of heat Asus has used up to 6 copper heatpipes, coming from both sides of the GPU block and that will carry the heat to the entire surface of the heatsink.

For its part, the VRM used to power this Asu s ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, consists of 6 SAP II power phases with premium capacitors for a duration of more than 90, 000 use, and a Digital DrMOS control for optimize the performance and temperatures of each Choke.

To power the entire assembly, you will only need a 6 + 2-pin power connector located on the right side. We must not forget the benefits of the Turing architecture in terms of consumption, which in this version has been reduced to 120 W, which is not bad at all.

The chipset that Nvidia has used for this GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has the designation TU116 of 12 nm FinFET, let's not confuse GTX with the last generation, because that is not the case. This GPU has a total of 1536 CUDA cores, but none of the RT or Tensor cores that were responsible for doing DLSS and Ray Tracing, so in this case we will not have that possibility. For its part, we have capacity for 96 texture units (TMUs) and 48 rendering units (ROPs), along with a 1536 KB L1 cache divided into two blocks.

In addition, Asus has overclocked this GPU and has prepared it for two different configurations, in the first " gaming mode " we will have a base clock of 1500 MHz, capable of going up to 1860 MHz in turbo mode. In the second call “ OC mode ”, we will have a 1530 MHz base clock capable of going up to 1890 MHz. Thanks to this we will exceed the 11 TFLOPS that marks the base version and the 169.9 Gigatexels / s.

As for the graphics memory used, Nvidia did not want to disappoint, and has opted for 6 GB GDDR6, although in this case at 12 Gbps instead of 14 for RTX. The 192 bits of memory bus are also maintained providing a bandwidth of 288.1 GB / s, compared to the 336 GB / s of the RTX 2060, so it is not bad. Recall that another GTX 1660 version is expected with a memory configuration of 3 and 6 GB GDDR5.

With these data the performance of this card is 1.5 times higher than the GTX 1060, and it is able to place its performance very close to the whole of an Nvidia GTX 1070, which still has very good credentials for a current mid-range.

As we have said, this card does not have Tensor or RT cores, which are responsible for performing ray tracing in real time on the new RTX, nor Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS), of which we already made an article with the new Metro Exodus to see what advantages or disadvantages it gave us. And the truth is that we do not get great advantages with it in 1920x1080p or 2K, which is what this new GTX is aimed at, so we should not make drama for it because for that we already have the RTX 2060 which is the next natural step in performance and price.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal. 3Mark Fire Strike 4K version. Time Spy.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Gameplay

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Overclocking

Note: Each graphics card can go up at different frequencies. Does it depend a little on how lucky you are?

At the overclocking level we have been able to give it a little tug on the memories (+1688 MHz) and in the core up to 1600 MHz. As standard it runs up to 1935 ~ 1950 MHz, with this improvement we have reached ~ 2050 MHz. benchmark we see a great improvement, but what about Games? We have chosen Shadow Of the Tomb Raider to test the total gain in FPS.

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider - DX12 ASUS STRIX GTX 1660 Ti Stock ASUS STRIX GTX 1660 Ti @ Overclock
1920 x 1080 (Full HD) 90 FPS 100 FPS
2560 x 1440 (WQHD) 60 FPS 67 FPS
3840 x 2160 (4K) 33 FPS 37 FPS

The results are very gratifying, with an overclock without modifying the TDP through BIOS flashing we gain 10 FPS in FULL HD, 7 FPS in 2K and an interesting 4 FPS in 4K. With this overclock we manage to match the performance of the RTX 2060? It remains to be seen how it performs the most modest graphics of the GTX 1660 Ti series.

Temperature and consumption

At the temperature level, we are very happy with the results obtained with the new Asus Strix Geforce GTX 1660 Ti. We have obtained 45 ºC at rest, we have to remember that it is a GPU that does not activate the fans at low load and that when we make intensive use of the graphics card they activate. Once active at maximum power, we have not seen it rise from 57 ºC on average.

We also leave you a picture after 12 hours of operation with Furmark running. As we can see the temperatures are great. The great work done by the Strix heatsink and the new fans is great.

Consumption is for the entire team *

Regarding energy consumption, we find an average of 67 W at low load and 214 W at maximum power. When we also stress the processor we reach 317 W. Once again NVIDIA takes advantage of having one of the best performance / consumption that the market offers.

Final words and conclusion about Asus Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti

We are very clear that the new GTX 1660 Ti series comes to replace the 6 GB GTX 1060. It has the benefits of turing architecture, a better performance of 1.5x more power than the previous generation, great frequencies, GDDR6 memories and one of the best heatsinks that we have seen in a mid / high range graphics card.

The Asus Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti has performed very well in Full HD, 2K and 4K resolutions. Giving more than a surprise in Doom 4 with +52 FPS of 4K average. In other games we have obtained + 30 FPS.

At the level of temperatures and consumption we are very happy with the result obtained. Bordering on the outstanding, once again, ASUS shows why it is one of the undisputed leaders in the sector .

We recommend reading the best graphics cards on the market

Obviously we miss Ray Tracing and DLSS technologies in this GTX series, but it is the difference factor in choosing this graphics card or an RTX 2060. Although we believe that all users who come from the GTX 1060, the natural leap will be that of the RTX 2060, since it has more power and has new technologies.

Starting today you can reserve the new GTX 1660 Ti. This model will have a recommended price of 379 euros, very close to the RTX 2060 that offers better performance. Although both the reference model and the Dual have a price of 319 and 329 euros respectively. We believe that it is one of the great options that the market offers and with one of the best PCBs in the GTX series.

What do you think of the Asus Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Ti? Is it worth the change of a GTX 1060? We want to know your opinion!
