Unboxing and design

The Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti graphics card is shown from the beginning as a luxury product, and designed for the most demanding users. The manufacturer offers it in a very colorful cardboard box, based on the corporate colors of ROG, the gaming division of Asus. The whole box has an excellent impression, and is built with premium cardboard.

Seen the outside it is time to open the box. The first thing we see is the graphics card perfectly protected by pieces of foam to prevent it from moving, an antistatic bag is in charge of the terminal to protect it in the best possible way. Along with the graphics card we see the documentation, the quick guide and the installation CD.

Finally we see a close-up of the Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti, an impressive graphics card that has been designed to get the most out of its Turing architecture.

In the latest generation, custom Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards have stabilized at virtually the same level of performance. However, the custom cards were noticeably better than the Founders Edition Nvidia, because the latter were constrained by reference clock speeds and a single-fan blower-style heatsink.

Now GeForce RTX Founders Edition cards include a dual fan heatsink, gorgeous design, and an 80MHz overclock from the factory. This means that assemblers like Asus are going to have it more difficult than ever, so they will have to work very hard to differentiate themselves. What will you have done this time?

This Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti comes with a massive heatsink, three fans, and a huge aluminum radiator, giving it the ability to run even cooler and faster than Nvidia's Founders Edition card.

The heatsink of this Asus ROG Strix 2080 Ti is based on the successful Asus DirectCu III, a true titan among graphics card cooling systems. This massive triple-slot graphics card is so big that Asus has reinforced it with a metal clamp that runs the length of the card, mounted on both the backplate and the I / O protector, to prevent it from bending by its own weight.

As for the video outputs of the Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti, we find the following video outputs:

  • Two HDMI 2.0b connections Three DisplayPort connectors One VirtualLink connector for virtual reality.

The GeForce RTX series has DisplayPort 1.4a ready connectors, allowing compatibility with 8K displays at 60Hz.

Heatsink and PCB Design

The heatsink features MaxContact technology, a precision machining technique that Asus says makes the heat diffuser 10 times flatter than usual, resulting in double surface contact with the graphics chip. That helps transfer more heat to the gigantic aluminum heat sink, which has 20 percent more surface area than its predecessor.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti has two BIOSes, which can be activated via a small switch on the outer edge of the card. By default, it flips to the left for performance mode, moving it to the right turns silent mode on. Performance mode is optimized for lower temperatures, so fans always spin. Quiet mode is optimized for acoustics, so it has a much less aggressive fan curve, and the fans remain idle if the GPU core temperature drops below 55 ° C.

Disassembling the heatsink reveals the card's PCB, which is manufactured with the highest quality components, including its robust 10 + 2 phase VRM Super Alloy Power II. Asus claims this design offers better overclocking margin , lower temperatures, more efficient power delivery, less electrical noise, and greater long-term durability. The PCB is powered by two 8-pin connectors.

The Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 is loaded with RGB LEDs, although you can quickly disable them by pressing the "Stealth Mode" button embedded in the card's back plate. When activated, both the ROG logo on the back plate and the "Republic of Gamers" text on the edge of the graphics card light up, as do the accents around the triple fans. All this is controlled through the Asus Aura Sync software.

Looking at the specs, the Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti mounts an Nvidia TU102 core, a GPU made by TSMC using the 12nm FinFET process. This core features a configuration consisting of a total of 4352 CUDA Cores, 272 TMUs, and 88 ROPs capable of reaching 1, 860MHz compared to the 1800MHz of Nvidia's Founders Edition model. If you install the Asus GPU Tweak II software, you will unlock an "OC Mode" that will boost the frequency to an impressive 1, 890MHz. The memory consists of 11 GB of GDDR6 type at 14 Gbps, with a 352-bit interface and a bandwidth of 616 GB / s.

Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti also includes the RT cores and Tensor Core necessary to enable technologies such as ray tracing and Deep Learning Super Sampling. Ray Tracing and DLSS aren't currently enabled in any game, though Nvidia says the first compatible games will appear sometime in October.

For benchmarks we will use the following titles:

  • 3DMark Fire Strike normal.3DMark Fire Strike 4K version.Time Spy.Heaven Superposition.VRMARK.

All tests have been passed with the filters to the maximum unless we indicate otherwise. In order to have adequate performance, we have carried out three types of tests: the first is the most common at Full HD 1920 x 1080, the second resolution is making the leap for 2K or 1440P (2560 x 1440P) gamers and the most enthusiastic with 4K (3840 x 2160). The operating system we have used has been Windows 10 Pro 64 bit and the latest drivers available from the Nvidia website.

What are we looking for in the tests?

First, the best possible image quality. The most important value for us is the average FPS (Frames per second), the higher the number of FPS the more fluid the game will go. To differentiate the quality a bit, we leave you a table to assess the quality in FPS, but we will also have the minimum Fps in the tests that were thus possible:

FRAMES BY SECONDS

Frames for Seconds. (FPS)

Less than 30 FPS Limited
30 ~ 40 FPS Playable
40 ~ 60 FPS Good
Greater than 60 FPS Fairly Good or Excellent

Game Testing

We have decided to make the leap to checking various games manually. The reason? Very simple, we want to give a much more realistic vision and cover tests with current games. We've revamped the old 2016 Tomb Raider for this new Shadow of the Tomb Raider compatible with Ray Tracing.

Software and overclock

Note: Remember that overclocking or manipulation carries a risk, we and any manufacturer are not responsible for improper use, use the head and always do so at your own risk.

We recommend that you install the EVGA Precision application in its latest version, since it allows us to measure the overlcock capacity that our graphics card will offer. You can do it from the ASUS application itself, but we really find it more comfortable to do it with EVGA.

At the moment it is the most powerful and best overclocked graphics card of the RTX 2080 Ti, we have not tried many either. We have managed to raise the core to 1423 MHz and the memories to 7600 MHz.

3DMARK FIRE STRIKE
Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti GLOBAL GRAPHICS SCORE
STOCK 26305 34906
OVERCLOCK 27360 37127

The result is spectacular with 27360 in global score and 37127 in graphics score. In the previous table we can see the performance difference. In FPS it corresponds to 2 - 3 FPS on average more, which is great. Great result from this top of the range GPU!

Final words and conclusion about Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti

The Asus ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti is one of the best RTX graphics cards we've tested for performance, cooling and PCB build quality.

At the component level it is incredible. Its heatsink at all times maintains very good temperatures and the sound is very low. Perhaps we would have liked that the profile at a certain point had a more aggressive line, but that

We really liked that thanks to the PCB and the good performance offered by the heatsink, it allows us to do a very good overclock. At the moment, it is the personalized card that has given us the best performance. Since the Founder Edition and another model from another manufacturer have not met our needs in OC.

Its store price will range from 1200 to 1300 euros. It is a very high price, but if you want a good quality graphics card. It is the price that we must pay, although we are not very in agreement with the general starting price of the RTX 2080 and RTX 2080 Ti.
