AUO Optronics should already be well known to high-end PC gamers, being a regular manufacturer of Nvidia's G-Sync HDR 4K 144Hz monitors.

AUO Introduces 8K HDR Monitor with 120Hz Refresh

AUO has surprised everyone by announcing an 85-inch screen with 8K (7680 × 4320) 120 Hz resolution at the Touch Taiwan 2018 event. This screen will feature HDR10 support on a quantum dot panel (QLED), which offers a level 1, 200 nits maximum brightness, support for a high refresh rate and 110% coverage of the NTSC color gamut.

AUO also boasts that this display offers a market leading bezel-less design and low levels of display reflectivity. AUO has not disclosed detailed specifications for this display at this time, such as the number of dimmable areas in the FALD (Full Array Local Dimming) backlight.

With that resolution and refresh rate, it is clear that commercializing it today would not make much sense, due to it being above the specifications that DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0 connections can support. HDMI 2.1 can support 8K at 120Hz, although this requires screen flow compression and 4: 2: 0 chroma subsampling. Right now, there are no HDMI 2.1 compatible graphics cards, no matter if it is a graphics card capable of playing games with such extreme resolution / refresh rate.

Because of this, much less do we have a price or release date, and AUO presents it as a sample for the 'future'.
