Microsoft continues to work to improve the capabilities of its Windows Defender security software. Earlier this year, the app prevented a massive cryptocurrency mining attack thanks to its Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection (ATP) technology that will also hit Windows 7 and 8.1. Now Microsoft is getting a kick out of some AV-TEST statistics that demonstrate the benefits of Windows Defender.

AV-TEST puts Windows Defender to a great level

Independent testing of AV-TEST during the period January to February 2018 showed that Windows Defender effectively fights most security threats. Windows Defender achieved a perfect score in "Protection", maintaining consistently high scores in this category, while correctly classifying most of the false positives, which escaped him, are almost irrelevant in the business sector. Regarding the impact on system performance, it surpassed the industry in almost all areas. Results that reflect investments in optimizing Windows Defender performance for high-frequency actions.

The report noted that Windows Defender only omitted two of the thousands of samples analyzed, however, when its engineers tested it against the Windows Defender full ATP stack, other components such as SmartScreen, Application Control and Application Guard recognized and mitigated these threats. Microsoft has advised users to check out the new capabilities it has added to Windows Defender ATP in the April 2018 Update, and has also claimed that it is continually improving its antivirus solution.

This shows that Windows Defender is capable of maintaining high security in Windows without the need for third-party antivirus software, which is also helped by constant security updates from Windows Update.
