Be quiet! Straight Power 11 Review in Spanish (complete analysis)

Be Quiet! is a German brand with a focus on offering particularly quiet and quality products. Today, we are privileged to take a look at their new 80 Plus Gold Certified Straight Power 11 range of sources, modular cabling, and their high-end SilentWings 3 fan.

Compared to its predecessor the Straight Power 10, the range has external improvements such as 100% modular wiring, and internal, now with Japanese capacitors and an internal design without cables. Let's see what we find… Let's start!

Technical Specifications Straight Power 11

External analysis

The front of the box follows the traditional line of the Be Quiet packaging, and is very small in size. The product is classified as part of its 'premium' line.

The back gives us information about the wiring that the source brings. We have no less than 10 SATA connectors, a super generous number. However, we do not like the distribution of PCIe cables, since it brings 2 cables with 1 8-pin connector, and 1 cable with 2 8-pin connectors. What is the problem? That the source only allows you to connect two of these cables, so we are left with a maximum of 3 8-pin connectors, something that does not happen in more powerful versions but is still disappointing for 650W.

As in the Straight Power 10, Be Quiet takes protections seriously, being one of the few that includes 12V multi-rail. With this system, 12V overcurrent protection can be implemented, something that would be like the circuit breakers in a house. Almost no 12V single rail source includes it, just the 3.3V and 5V rails. So, bravo for Be Quiet!

When opening the box we find the source, the user manual, flanges, screws and wiring.

The cables use high quality meshing and fortunately they do not have annoying capacitors, as in other sources. Which is better, flat or meshed wiring? Each person has their opinion. We prefer flat cables but we really did not find any inconvenience with this set, especially since as we say they do not have capacitors.

The exterior of the fountain is very clean and oozes elegance. We like to see the modular cabling system and towering SilentWings 3 fan.

Of course… let's not forget that beauty is inside. Let's see what they surprise us with inside.

Internal analisis

For this model, the brand has once again trusted its alliance with the renowned manufacturer FSP, with a completely renovated interior that uses a wireless design with which Be Quiet! aims to stand out. The internal designs are, again, LLC on the primary side, and DC-DC on the secondary side. The latter allows voltages to always be stable regardless of the load they are subjected to, as we explain in this forum article.

In addition to the full filtering stage, we also have a MOV (against surges) , an NTC, and a relay (against spikes when turning on the source), which is to be expected.

The primary condenser is hidden by heat shrink tubing, but from the shape of the cap we know that it is from the Japanese manufacturer Hitachi.

On the secondary side, we exclusively have Japanese capacitors from Nippon Chemi-Con and Rubycon, a huge improvement over its predecessor the Straight Power 10, which used capacitors from Taiwanese Teapo.

We see on the right the DC-DC converters, on its board is the supervisor chip, a Weltrend WT7579, which houses the extensive system of protections that Be Quiet trusts, and which we love as this is one of the few sources It offers over current protection (OCP) on the 12 volt rail.

We reach the star piece, the fan. This is a Be Quiet Silent Wings 3, and this is one of the few models seen in power supplies that incorporate real dynamic fluid bearings (FDB), i.e. the quietest bearing and one of the most reliable in the long term..

Why do we say " FDB Reales" ? For a very simple reason: Most manufacturers that advertise FDB fans actually use worse quality modified variants, called 'rifle' or 'hydrodynamic' bearings. Real FDB bearings are patented by Panasonic so you have to pay a license to implement them, which is very expensive.

So it becomes clear that this is one of the best fans that can be found in a power supply. In fact, the box variants of the SilentWings 3 are highly reputed for their quality and quiet operation…

Test bench and performance tests

We have carried out tests to regulate the voltages, consumption and speed of the fan. To do this, we have used the following equipment, which charges the source to approximately half its capacity:

TESTING BENCH

Processor:

Intel Core i5-4690K

Base plate:

Asus Maximus VII HERO.

Memory:

8GB DDR3

Heatsink

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

HDD

Samsung 850 EVO SSD.

Seagate Barracuda HDD

Graphic card

Sapphire R9 380X

Power supply

Be Quiet! Straight Power 11 650W

The measurement of voltages is real, since it is not extracted from Software but from a UNI-T UT210E multimeter. For consumption we have a Brennenstuhl meter and a laser tachometer for fan speed.

Test scenarios

The tests are divided into several scenarios, in order from lowest to highest consumption.

CPU load GPU charging Actual consumption (approx)
Scenario 1 None (at rest) ~ 70W
Scenario 2 Prime95 None ~ 120W
Scenario 3 None FurMark ~ 285W
Scenario 4 Prime95 FurMark ~ 340W

Voltage regulation

DC-DC converters prevent us from seeing any abnormal behavior in voltage regulation.

Consumption

The consumption goes in par to the other two sources of 650W with Gold / Platinum certificates that we have had in our hands.

Fan speed

To give a better view of reality, we subject the source to a very long charge, with about 6 hours of testing:

Fan test CPU load GPU charging Measurement time
Test 1 Resting When turning on the fountain
Test 2 Normal use After 2-4 hours
Test 3 Prime95 Without charge After 30 minutes
Test 4 Without charge FurMark After 30 minutes
Test 5 Prime95 FurMark After 30 minutes
Test 6 Prime95 FurMark After 2 hours

Be Quiet manages to offer one of the quietest sources on the market without affecting its cooling, thanks to its top-quality fan that always stays on at very low speeds.

In all these tests we have found a fan speed of between 230 and 250 revolutions per minute, a very low figure that makes it impossible for us to hear the source without putting our ears to 1 centimeter.

We are, therefore, facing a model that offers the best combination of good internal cooling and silence. For more, with the magnificent fan it brings, we should not worry about its durability.

This source competes from you to you with semi-passive models. We always say so in source reviews: Either full semi-passive mode, or fan always on! Deployments where the fan turns on and off continuously are very detrimental to the loudness and life of the fan.

Final words and conclusion about Be Quiet Straight Power 11

If we think about the greatest virtues of this source, two aspects come to mind: its fan and its protections.

With the Silent Wings 3 fan , which employs one of the best bearings seen in power supplies, we find reliability and silence. And it is that a silence comparable to that of semi-passive sources has been achieved, but without diminishing the internal cooling of the source, which we applaud.

Regarding the protections, this is one of the few models that incorporate a well-designed multi- rail system, and thanks to it we have overcurrent protection (OCP) in the 12V rail, something that, we insist, some models of more than € 200. Imagine a short circuit in which hundreds of amps would pass through a single component: with 12V OCP, we are protected.

Clearly, we are facing a very competitive launch that boasts of its internal quality, silence and protection. However, with this version of 650W costing around € 125 in Spain, the price is much higher than that of other competitors who, although most do not offer the additions of this Be Quiet, do have more attractive prices.

In addition, the warranty period is also shorter than normal, 5 years, but it is a brand policy that has nothing to do with the quality of the product, which in this case is extreme. Finally, we would like to see the PCIe connectors problem reviewed, and we hope it is just a bug in this batch.

If you are looking for a quiet, well protected and reliable source to power your equipment, here you have a great choice.
