Overwatch was one of the best video games of 2016, with more than 20 million players who have acquired this title since it was launched last May. With the popularity of this Blizzard game, a large community has been created around it but this also brings its downsides, the cheaters.

Wave of banns in Overwatch to fight cheaters

Cheaters are cheating players who make special programs to take advantage of others. These types of players are very common in games that enjoy great popularity in the online competitive genre, see Counter Strike: Go. To combat cheats, Blizzard has carried out in the last few hours a new wave of bans of more than 10, 000 accounts that used 'aimbot' programs to auto-target and 'nuking'.

What is Nuking?

One of the biggest problems facing the Overwatch community is nuking. This system is based on denial of service attacks, also known as DDoS attacks. These attacks try to saturate the system by making multiple simultaneous connections from different parts of the globe.

With this technique, the cheating player saturates the connections of the other players and generates latency, which is a great disadvantage since the actions of the players in the game are not immediately counted but take a few moments, this is exploited by the cheater to kill everything that comes his way without too much effort.

Blizzard noted this issue and banned 10, 000 players using cheats in Overwatch in a single stroke. Of those more than 10, 000 bans, 1, 500 occurred in China. The number of banns does not seem so impressive when we consider that there are 20 million accounts in Overwatch but it shows that Blizzard is on the lookout to punish these types of toxic players.
