Both the Apple Watch Series 2 and later models have a small but useful feature called a water lock. Thanks to it you can wet your watch, and even submerge it under water, and it will continue to work perfectly.

Apple Watch: use water lock mode

Apple says on its support website that “the Apple Watch Series 2 and Apple Watch Series 3 can be used in surface water activities, such as swimming in the pool or in the sea. However, they should not be used for scuba diving, water skiing, or activities involving high-speed water impacts or deep dives. ” Therefore, first of all, be aware of these limitations.

That said, with the water lock mode activated, both the Apple Watch screen and the hardware buttons will be disabled in order to avoid accidental pulsations. To activate this feature, simply follow the instructions below:

  • On the screen of your Apple Watch, swipe from the bottom up to display the Control Center. Once there, tap the Water Lock icon that is clearly identified by the drawing of a drop of water. After If you have enabled it, you will see that the Water Block icon appears on the top of your Apple watch.

From this precise moment your Apple Watch is in water lock mode and you will not be able to use it in the usual way until you have deactivated it.

To deactivate the water lock mode, simply rotate the digital crown counterclockwise. The Apple Watch will emit several beeps that allow it to expel the water that may have entered the speaker.

While the "Water Lock" mode is activated, the Apple Watch will continue to function normally; the display will illuminate to show the time and notification inputs (if not completely submerged underwater). Submerged underwater, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth may fail. However, if you are simply walking in the rain or bathing with it, you can still receive notifications and check the time. However, any additional functionality to that will be disabled.
