How to change router password - best methods for all models

Table of contents:

If something always worries about routers is their security, at all costs we want no one to enter our network and do some hooliganism or literally steal the Internet from us. So we have set out to make this article on how to change the password of the router, whatever it is, and the operator it is.

Index of contents

Although of course, many times we will have to resort irreparably to our provider to facilitate access to it from the first moment. In any case, it is unlikely that someone will get into our router, since the first requirement is that they are connected to it either by cable or by Wi-Fi. Although there are many programs to steal Wi-Fi, so we should never trust.

What password should we change on a router

To make sure that our router is secure, the least we can do is change the password to access its firmware, and also the one that has the factory WiFi network. This will be done from the router's own configuration system, and absolutely all have these two options available.

In addition, we recommend modifying if possible the name or SSID of our WiFi networks and also the username, which will typically be "admin". At least it will be one more obstacle to intruders not getting our credentials.

Things to consider before

We still have to keep a few things in mind before changing the router password, and this is applicable to all computers whether it is an operator router or a computer that we have purchased ourselves.

We must be connected to the router

This is something that we could ignore for being quite logical but that some absent-minded users do not take into account.

Whether with a computer or with a mobile phone or other device, we must be connected to the router. It must be him and he alone, who has given us the IP address of our team. In no case can we access connected to a 4G network, or via Bluetooth (although some support it). Some support remote management, but we will not consider this possibility here because it is insecure.

Identify the access IP to the router

It is very important to know how to enter or access our router, and that in Windows is quite simple and can be done in two different ways. We must know that a router, like another device, has an IP address for access, and it is not always the same.

From the network section

To do this we just need our file explorer. We will open any window and go to the " Network " icon in the left column.

If we have never accessed this section we will get a message indicating that we do not have network detection activated.

Click on " OK " and now click on the text balloon under the address bar of the browser. We choose the first option.

It is recommended to choose the first option, especially if we are connected by public Wi-Fi will prevent other users from viewing our equipment from the network.

Now we can see our router directly in this window, which appears in the " network infrastructure " section with the router's own icon.

We just have to click on it as if it were a folder to access its welcome screen.

Knowing the IP with command prompt

The second method to do this is to go to the start menu and type " CMD ". The command prompt will appear in the search result, so press to access the window.

Now we will write the command:

ipconfig

And then we press Enter to execute it. A series of information will appear in which we will have to look for the section that has more information. The most normal thing will be to find it in " Wireless LAN Adapter " if we are connected by Wi-Fi or in " Ethernet Adapter " if we are connected by cable.

Here we should look for the " Default Gateway " line. This will be the address that interests us, since it is the router.

Now we just have to open the web browser, whatever it is, and put this IP address in it, with its 4 numbers and its points without spaces. Press Enter and we will obtain the access page to the router.

Change password of a router purchased by us

This section is practically unnecessary, since the user who buys a router usually has some knowledge of networks and knows how to access it to carry out the first configuration. But of course, the user who buys the router is not always the one who installs it, so there is no reason to know all this, so the section makes sense.

Having overcome this reasoning, we are already at the access screen of the router, which expects our username and password.

We will do the example with an Asus router.

The normal thing will be that our access user is admin if we have never entered and the password will be admin, 1234, or one that the router has by default, as was the case here.

And how can we know your default password? Well friends, this will appear in the installation instructions that should come with the router or on the back of the equipment. In a small place we can see the Wi-Fi SSID, User and Password for access.

And if nothing we have tested works and it was a technician or a friend who installed the router, then we should ask him for explanations. It is normal that when accessing the router for the first time it asks us to modify the username and password if we wish. So it is possible that the ports that installed the router changed the password and did not give it to us.

In the case of the Asus router, the user and password change will be found in the "Administration" tab "System".

The firmware is not even remotely the same on all routers, always depending on the manufacturer. So it's time to search a little in the configuration until you find the correct section. Normally it will come in a section " Security ", " System " or something like that.

Now we will simply change or maintain our user and write the new password that we want. Then we go all the way down and click on " Apply " to save the changes.

The computer will restart, or not, and in the next access we will already have new credentials.

Change Wi-Fi password

Another parameter that we can change in almost any router is the Wi-Fi password and its SSID. In the Asus firmware we do not have it too complicated, since we will directly find the function in the " Wireless " section.

In addition, we can place different passwords on the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies if the firmware differentiates them. We also recommend modifying the network SSID to be able to better identify it and choose a network encryption WPA, WPA2 or higher so that the router cannot hack us with the typical programs.

We can still find a second section dedicated to the guest network. This network operates independently from our Wi-Fi network and is focused on preventing people who connect from seeing our entire WLAN network. It will also have its own SSID and password.

Change the password in different routers of supplying companies

In addition to the routers that we buy, companies supply their own equipment with the Internet contract, so let's see the procedure in the most used ones.

Change password movistar router

Let's start with Movistar, which in this case the company offers support to do it directly from its website by accessing the configure mirouter section.

We only have to have an account in My Movistar, which obviously we will have as clients that we are, and then the page will guide us step by step without complications. In addition to changing username and password, we can also modify our Wi-Fi, update the firmware in the section, open ports, etc.

Change Orange router password

In the case of Orange routers we have different versions of them, in fact the oldest ones could even be admin / 1234. Livebox 2, 2.1 and Livebox Next routers are currently used for fiber and ADSL.

In this case we will access in a normal and current way by placing your IP address in the browser, which will be in all cases 192.168.1.1. If this does not work then we will carry out the steps that we have marked above.

The user of the fiber routers is " admin ", while the access password will be the same as that used by the WiFi. This information can be found on the sticker on the base of the router. In the case of the previous commented versions, we will enter with user " admin " and password " admin ". In the administration section we can place the one that we want.

Change Vodafone router password

The process for Ono / Vodafone routers is the same as in the previous case. Although now we will use the IP 192.168.0.1 to access them.

The password and user, as well as the Wi-Fi SSID and password will be on the sticker on the base. With this we will enter the firmware and we can modify the key without problems.

Change Jazztel router password

Finally, we deal with the case of Jazztel's ZTE routers, a widely used distributor also in our country that supplies fiber. Once again we will use IP 192.168.1.1, or we will follow the procedure that we have indicated.

In your case, it indicates two access possibilities depending on the router version that we have. It can be jazztel / jazztel or admin / admin as username / password. In the administration section is where we can change the access credentials.

Conclusion on changing router password

As we can see, changing the password and access to a router is quite simple, and we almost always have all the necessary data on the router itself, as in its support book.

If you have a case that is not here or with a different username and password, the best thing you can do is contact the support division of your Internet provider. We cannot contemplate all the cases, but we bet that the procedure is the same and the access credentials too.

Lastly, we strongly recommend customizing the router username and password to prevent external user access and also customizing the WI-Fi password with WPA2 security as a minimum.

Now we leave you with some interesting links about networks:

What service provider do you have, what password and username did your factory router have? Tell us your case if it is "peculiar" to add it to the tutorial.
