Although it is true that data rates have improved substantially in recent times (in the double direction of price reduction and megabytes increase, especially by virtual mobile operators or OMVs), it is not less true than in certain Circumstances such as travel outside the borders of the European Union, or on a day-to-day basis for users whose data plans are more limited, it is convenient to monitor, control and even limit the consumption of mobile data. Today we show you some ways to achieve this goal.

Better manage mobile data consumption

When we go on a trip, regardless of the destination, the consumption of mobile data is triggered by activities such as uploading and sharing photos and videos, consulting Google Maps, searching for information on the net, communicating with friends and family… For all this, it is convenient take some precautions if we don't want to run out of data halfway.

Open the Settings app → and scroll to the Mobile data section. There you have a meter that you can reset, so you can keep an eye on your consumption. In addition, there you will also see a list of applications that make use of mobile data: disable the use of mobile data for all those applications that do not need it.

Visit Settings → iTunes Store and App Store and uncheck the use of Mobile Data. This way you will avoid updates to apps and content until your iPhone is again connected to a WiFi network.

WhatsApp is an "enemy" of both data consumption and battery drain. My recommendation is to abandon its progressive use (and better we do not talk about privacy issues), but if it is not possible at the moment, go to Settings → Data usage within WhatsApp and limit the download of multimedia files using mobile data.

On the other hand, you should also bear in mind that, when a Wi-Fi connection is very slow, intermittent or, in general, low or poor quality, your iPhone's own operating system launches the so-called " Wi-Fi Assistant ". Fi “. And what does that mean? Simple. So that you do not stay “disconnected”, it will use mobile data to improve the quality of your connectivity to the Wi-Fi network on duty. This measure is great but of course, it is not compatible when our desire is to limit or control the consumption we make of our mobile data package. Accordingly, open the Settings app on your device, select the Mobile Data option, and disable that Wi-Fi network wizard.

File synchronization in the cloud also involves a certain consumption of mobile data. In periods when this action is not strictly necessary, such as during your holidays, you can deactivate this option without fear, because your files will be synchronized when you connect to a Wi-Fi network again. Open the Settings app, select the Mobile data section, and deactivate the option for iCloud Drive. You can do the same with other services such as DropBox or Box from that same section of the settings of your iPhone, or from the settings within each application.

Another important option for those who make use of streaming video and / or audio services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Apple Music, is to download the content via WiFi on our device, in this way we will not make any data consumption watching our series. Favorite while we travel by bus or subway, or when we listen to music walking.
