Today we will take one more step and we will learn step by step how to create virtual machine in Hyper-V. We will see how to configure this to get the best possible performance. We should not only focus on the main Hypervisors such as VMware or VirtualBox. Windows also has a good tool for these purposes such as Hyper-V.

Without a doubt, virtualization is something that more and more people and professionals use it, it started being a service available only to the best companies, but more and more users are entering this world and using the advantages that it provides. Microsoft did not want to be less and has implemented in its main desktop system the option to virtualize our machines and systems through hardware.

We just have to keep in mind that we will need to have a version of Windows server, 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education to have Hyper-V. Those who are Windows Home users will not have the possibility to virtualize with this tool, since it is not available for these versions of the system.

We have already done a tutorial of what Hyper-V was and how to activate it in Windows 10. Here we will get down to work on creating and configuring a virtual machine under this Hypervisor

Create virtual machine in Hyper-V

Well, without further delay we will proceed to see how to create a virtual machine in Hyper-V. As normal, we will have to have already activated our Hypervisor in the system.

How to activate Hyper-V in Windows 10

We open Hyper-V through the start menu. We will find it in the Administrative Tools section. Although we can also write directly " Hyper-V Administrator"

Once we have opened Hyper-V, we will click on the button of the toolbar " Action ", " New " and " Virtual machine ". In this way we will begin with the wizard to create the virtual machine in Hyper-V

In the first window of the wizard, we will have to put the name of the virtual machine and the location where it will be stored. For this example, we are going to create an Ubuntu virtual machine.

Next, we will have to select the virtual machine generation that we want to do. For us to understand quickly, if we have a physical computer with UEFI and the possibility of activating virtualization technologies in it, we will select "Generation 2"

In the next window, we will have to allocate an amount of RAM to the virtual machine. In the case of Ubuntu in its 64-bit desktop version, we could put, for example, 2 GB. But we can also activate the option " Use dynamic memory for this virtual machine ". This will allow more resources to be allocated if necessary.

As for the network configuration, we can only choose "Not connected" or "De fault Switch " to establish a network in the virtual machine. Then we will see how to create a bridge mode connection. We continue.

The next step will be to create or assign a virtual hard disk for the virtual machine. If we do not have any done yet, we will click on " Create a virtual hard disk " and we will allocate it a certain amount of space (in GB).

The last window corresponds to the selection of the installation mode of the operating system in the virtual machine. We have an ISO image of the system in question, so we will use the second option, and select the file from our hard drive.

We could also select to install later, or, if we have a NAS or some similar shared file system with an operating system, we would choose the third option

The wizard will show us a summary and finally our virtual machine will be ready to be installed.

Start virtual machine

Now what we will have to do is start the virtual machine to begin the installation of the operating system.

For this we must place ourselves for example on the virtual machine and click with the right button. We will choose the " Connect " option. We will also have this option in the toolbar located on the right side of the Hypervisor.

The installation process will be the same as for any other system.

Solution error no operating system was loaded Hyper-V

At this point, if during the previous steps we select the option of " Generation 2 ", it is possible that we get a nice error when connecting the virtual machine pro, the first time.

This error is due to the fact that, by default, a " Secure Boot " option is activated in the virtual machine whose function is to analyze the signatures of the operating system to be installed to validate that only the approved components can be executed.

As this was not the case, we have obtained this error.

What we will have to do to solve this error is to deactivate the secure boot of the virtual machine. For this we will do the following:

  • Right click on the virtual machine to choose " Disconnect " to turn off the machine. Now we will go to the " Configuration " option located on the toolbar in the right area. Once inside, we go to the " Security ”. Here we will uncheck the option " Safe boot "

Once this is done, click on " Apply " and try again to start our virtual machine. Now everything should go smoothly.

Hyper-V configuration

Once the virtual machine is created, it is important to see some configuration options that will help us improve the possibilities of our virtual machines.

How to create a bridge mode network adapter in Hyper-V

Well, as we saw before during the process of creating the virtual machine, we could only configure as the network adapter the one that comes by default in Hyper-V. To configure a virtual machine with the bridge mode and that directly obtain the IP address of the router, we will have to create a new network adapter. Let's see what we should do:

  • Located in the main Hyper-V window, we must click on the option “ Switch Manager ”. Option located on the right toolbar of the program.

  • Now we click on " New virtual network switch " and we choose the " External " option We click on " Create virtual switch "

On the next screen, we must choose the network card that will be responsible for providing the bridge to the router. By default, the option that we are currently using to connect to the network will be shown as active. In our current case it is Wi-Fi.

Choose adapter in virtual machine

To choose the new adapter created, we will have to go to the configuration of the virtual machine and place ourselves in the " Network adapter " section, we will display the " Virtual switch " list and choose the one we have created in the previous section

Now when we start the virtual machine, we will verify that we are obtaining the IP address directly from the router.

Other options

The rest of the virtual machine options are quite similar to other Hypervisors.

  • Add Hardware: from here we can add new hardware drivers such as virtual hard drives or network adapters. Firmware: with this option we will be able to modify the boot sequence of the virtual machine or delete the active ISO images in the virtual CD-ROM reader. Memory: we can at all times configure the amount of RAM memory of the virtual machine. We recommend activating dynamic RAM if we have a computer with good hardware so that Hyper-V manages this resource automatically. Processor: from this option we can assign more than one core to the virtual machine Administration section: from the second section, we can modify the name of the virtual machine, location of paging files, or configure the control points to store certain states of the virtual machine.

Basically this is the way to create virtual machine in Hyper-V
