In this life there are always accidents and cluelessness, and sometimes you may have executed a command without knowing it and stay with your face broken because your keyboard has stopped responding. Don't worry, anonymous users: we are here to show you how to unlock the computer keyboard. Let's go!

There are some keyboards that have dedicated lock / unlock button (similar to Windows button lock for gaming keyboards) and others that require pressing a few keys to make it happen (in my case both AltGr + Fn + F12 and Fn + work. F12). Before getting into operating system issues you should look:

All the procedures that we are going to discuss below are based on the fact that the keyboard is correctly connected (if it is wired) and has enough battery / batteries (if it is wireless). With that said, let's see how to unlock the computer keyboard.

Do you have a lock button / command?

Most common keyboard shortcuts to unlock

What keyboard model do you have? If you have a lock command, you just have to repeat it to release it again. Take a look at the back and check its brand and serial number. In many cases it depends not only on your operating system, but also on how your keyboard is assigned the functions. We are going to leave you here some common combinations to unlock the computer keyboard:

  • AltGr + Fn + Custom Shift Lock Button (Shift) Right: Press for about five seconds (Windows 7, 8, and 10 OS laptops). Fn + F6: three seconds for Mac OS keyboards. Shift (right) + Num Lock: Windows XP. Ctrl + Alt + L: Windows 8 and 8.1 Fn + Alt: Unlock Num Lock. Fn + Num Lock: Lock / unlock numeric keypad. Alt + NumLock: for those without the Fn key. Fn + Custom Lock Button (usually includes padlock icon) - can be assigned to any of the Function keys. Fn + Scroll Lock: for older keyboards it usually works.

How to unlock keyboard on Windows OS and notebook

Sometimes Windows gets funny and decides to laugh at our expense. It may happen that the reason for the keyboard lock of your laptop is for having held down the right Shift key for a few seconds without realizing it.

This triggers the automatic deactivation of the Windows Filter Keys. It is warned with a pop-up window that, if we close without reading, makes the keyboard useless. However, it is easy to fix: just press and hold the same key again and the system will restore the keyboard. This prank can occur with versions of Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Step one: accessibility center in control panel

Step two: enter facilitate keyboard use

Step three: check that the boxes are unchecked

Another way to find a solution is in the system itself. We can go to the Control Panel <Accessibility Center <Facilitate the use of the Keyboard. We must check that all the boxes are unchecked (unless we have something configured for any type of special need).

The crash can also occur on Mac laptops or keyboards, no one is spared here.

Pressing Fn + F6 for about three seconds should light the green or orange LED that is in the area of the numeric keypad, indicating its activation. What has happened is that activating the Num Lock key disables the alphabetic keyboard in favor of the numeric one.

If this does not solve it, we can go to: Apple Menu> System Preferences> Accessibility> Keyboard and check that the Activate Slow Keys function is disabled. Also in Accessibility we can check that in the Trackpad and Mouse section the mouse keys are disabled.

Another thing to check is in: Apple Menu> System Preferences> Keyboard > Input Sources to make sure that the keyboard configuration is the usual one.

We can also reset the system settings to configure it again: in the command panel we must paste:

sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist

Which will ask you for password or Administrator credentials since it involves deleting a file from MacOs, and we proceed to restart Mac without disconnecting the keyboard. When restarting, an Assistant will ask us for its configuration, to which we must select ISO.

Conflict between software and OS

Major brands often offer peripherals with installation softwares and drivers for macros, DPI, or RGB lighting that can sometimes conflict with the configuration of the operating system.

It is not common, but if you have recently installed an update (either system or software) and something is not working as it should, this is probably the cause. Check your keyboard configuration and if necessary, uninstall the drivers as a last resort and check if it works correctly when you install it again. OS updates should not be rolled back, but if it is your preference and you are sure the fault is coming from there, it is also possible to Restore System to a previous restore point. From Professional Review it is not what we recommend the most.

What to do if nothing works

The rare situation may occur that none of the above works. In such case we can:

  1. Disconnect and reconnect the keyboard (a classic). Restart the computer and connect the keyboard once to the desktop if point A) doesn't work. Threaten it too loudly or pray to your favorite deity.

We cannot guarantee that these latter suggestions will work, and in fact it is possible that if you have checked everything in the guide and your keyboard still does not respond there really is something in its mechanism or connector that is not working and you think it is locked when it could be broken. We hope that this is not your case.

If you want to share any other suggestion that we may have left in the pipeline, do not hesitate to leave it in the comments. Until next time!
