Currently it is very easy to download a wide variety of web content, be it movies, music, series, photos, documents and everything you can imagine. With that, more and more storage devices like hard drives, also known as HD, are needed. If your hard drive is almost full, maybe it's time to buy a bigger one so you don't have to delete files.

But, how can you know if the HD you bought or are thinking of buying is compatible with the motherboard used on your PC? That is what we teach you in this tutorial.

Discover the type of HD your Motherboard has

First of all, it is necessary to know the type of hard disk, we can mention two main types: the IDE and SATA. The first (IDE) fell into disuse and is neither produced nor sold in stores. But it is still possible to find them on old computers or for sale on second-hand product websites. The second type (SATA) is the current standard and can be found easily on any computer or for sale at almost any computer store.

To identify them is not so much mystery, because they use different connectors. The IDE HDD has a 40-pin connector. It also has a 4-pin male connector for power. Already the Sata HDs use a much smaller connector, only 7 pins. In the following image, we see the difference between the connectors of an HD IDE and SATA .

Step 1. Download the HWiNFO program. It is a hardware diagnostic program.

Step 2. To install and run the program, click the "Run" button, already on the first screen. Close the smaller windows and leave only the largest open, as it provides more detailed information.

Step 3. Click on the "Motherboard" located on the left side of the program.

Step 4. When you click on this option, various information about the motherboard will appear on the right side of the screen of the program. In "PCH Features", the program shows what types of storage devices are supported. In this way, we know that if we buy a SATA disk it can be installed on this motherboard without problems.

That is all. Whenever you want to know if a hard drive is compatible with your motherboard, first identify the type of hard drive you have on hand. Second, use the HWiNFO to find out if your motherboard supports such a bus.
