One of the good things that the new generation of solid hard drives has brought is much greater speed in moving the information stored on them. But there are also downsides, such as the availability of less storage capacity. And it is that these discs are still quite expensive, so sometimes the pockets give the disc a capacity of no more than 150 GB, so we will have a hard drive full of crap in less than a rooster crows.
Windows 10 free up space utility
Windows 10 comes with a file cleaner natively, so the need to use third-party programs is completely eliminated. We recommend using this native application for having a perfect implementation to the needs of the system. With the use of external applications we run the risk that these will delete important files for us, with the Windows application this will not be a problem.
The first option we have in Windows is to Free up disk space for life. Since the Windows XP era, at least, this application has made life a lot easier for us. To open it we will do the following:
- We go to the "This computer" icon by opening any directory in the file explorer. To find it, we will look for it in the directory list on the left side of the browser.
- On our hard disk, we right-click and choose “ properties”. A window will open showing us the properties of our hard disk and the space used. Click on the button "free space"
When the new window opens, it will show us a list of files that can be deleted. If we click once more on the button "Clean system files" we will get a larger list of files to delete.
The application will further explore files that can be removed from the hard drive. If you have recently updated Windows 10, it will detect previous installations of Windows. This folder normally takes up a lot of space, so we can free even more than 20 GB. In our case, in fact, they are almost 22GB
If we have multiple partitions or hard drives
An important detail is the fact of having several partitions or several hard drives on our computer.
If we have ever noticed, each of these hard drives have so to speak its own recycle bin. In our view, there will only be one on our desktop, and this will contain all the files that we have been deleting. But if we select another hard disk, for example, and open the options to free up space for it, we will have the following:
We are shown the specific files that we have removed from this disk, so from here we can also delete those files. Logically no temporary files will be displayed unless the system documents folder is manually located in a different location than the Windows installation.
Free up Windows 10 space from settings panel
But Windows 10 Cleaner isn't left alone here. With the new configuration application integrated in Windows 10 we will be able to see all the options that it has.
- We go to Start and enter the Configuration (gear wheel icon) We choose the first option "System" In the list of lateral options click on "Storage"
A very interesting option that we have implemented since the October 2017 Creators Update is the " Storage Sensor". With this option activated Windows will automatically delete certain files such as temporary files and the trash.
If we enter the option "Change the way to free up space automatically" we can decide how often files will be deleted and even accept that Windows automatically delete files from previous Windows installations.
If we choose the "free space now" option on the main storage screen , the system will scan the hard drive for files to delete. Basically it will be the same as the option to clean disk, but shown in a more friendly and complete way
Tips to avoid running out of hard drive
If you are running out of space on your disk we give you some tips to avoid having to delete valuable emergency files.
Use the cloud
We have at our disposal many places that if we are registered with an account. For example, OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox, we will have at our disposal a large amount of free storage that we can use temporarily until we solve our storage problems.
Use the storage sensor
As we have explained in the previous section, the storage sensor is very useful for the system to automatically delete temporary files when we forget to check it.
Remove programs you no longer use
Another way to free up space is to erase the applications that we no longer need. To know how to delete them visit our tutorial:
Consider buying a new hard drive
We recommend that if your hard drive is running low you consider buying a new one. Mechanical hard drives are very affordable and have a large storage capacity. The indicated thing would be to have an SSD for the installation of Windows with less storage and another one with a greater capacity intended only for files.
Follow the tips and procedures we've outlined here to avoid running out of storage. If you have questions or new proposals for tutorials leave us in the comments. We hope you found it useful.
