One of the most common criticisms among iPhone users points to performance and battery life. Although it is true that over the years their capacity has been increased, especially in Plus models, and that the iOS system itself tries to optimize battery performance, it is no less true that, for example The iPhone X's 2716 mAh is far from the 4, 000 mAh offered by Xiaomi's Redmi 5 Plus.

On the other hand, we must not lose sight of the fact that the consumption of the battery depends to a large extent on the use we make of the terminal, and I do not mean the total use time, but the type of apps we use most frequently, some of the which, like Facebook or WhatsApp, consume a disproportionate amount of resources. In order that you can improve the battery of your iPhone, next we will offer you a series of tips. Of course, keep in mind that they are not a panacea. They will improve your device's autonomy, but don't expect to double its plug independence either.

Calibrate the battery

Some time ago, a Genius from the Apple store in Nueva Condomina, in Murcia, napping my iPhone asked me the following question: "You never turn off your iPhone, do you?" Impossible to deny him. I never (or almost never) manage to drain the battery of my iPhone, so I always charge it while still having a certain percentage of battery. In order to maintain or improve both the performance of the terminal and the performance of the battery itself, it is advisable to turn the iPhone on and off from time to time, once a week or every two weeks.

Apart from this advice, it is also very convenient to calibrate the iPhone battery, something that we can do with a much more spaced periodicity, such as every six months or so. The process is tremendously simple:

  1. Charge your iPhone normally, until it reaches 100% of the battery. Use your iPhone in the usual way, but you must let the battery drain, that is, it turns off on its own., for about eight hours (you can take advantage of the night or simply use it as an excuse to “disconnect.”) Then charge it again and let the iPhone turn on by itself. And of course, don't use it until it reaches 100% charge again.

As simple as that. With this simple trick it is possible that certain problems may disappear, for example, an unusual decrease in the battery percentage indicator (that goes from 46% to 38% at once) and, of course, you will extend the daily duration of the battery a little more battery of your iPhone. But this is not all.

More tips to improve iPhone battery

Next, I propose a series of tricks with which you can improve the battery of the iPhone. Of course, do not forget to calibrate the battery as I have explained previously.

Do not close open applications

Some users believe that closing open applications will reduce battery consumption, however, this is nothing more than a false myth. When the app is open but is not being used, it remains in a kind of "lethargy", consuming hardly any resources. However, if we close it, when it is reopened it must be started again, and this involves a high expenditure of resources, and among them, of energy. Craig Federighi, Apple's director of software, himself confirmed that closing the apps does not improve battery performance.

Activate power saving mode

Although the terminal itself will ask you if you want to activate the low consumption mode when the battery percentage reaches 20%, the truth is that you can activate it at any time from the control center. I always have it activated, even when I disconnect the iPhone with a full charge, and it shows. According to Apple, you can earn up to three extra hours of battery life. I am not so clear about this extreme, but the truth is that it will help you get to the end of the day.

Review the "Battery usage"

This is very important. Open the Settings app, go to the Battery section, and upload the usage information. In this way you will be able to check where you spend your iPhone battery and, above all, which applications consume the most. With this information in hand, you can manage certain settings, for example, disable background updates for those applications for which you really do not need it.

Optimize location settings

When we install new applications, we accept permissions almost without thinking, among them, the location. This means that the iPhone is working continuously to allow these apps to access the location. For Google Maps, sports apps or others, location is probably important, but maybe not always.

Go to Settings → Privacy → Location. From there you can completely deactivate the location or adjust the location individually for each application choosing between the options "Always", "Never" or "When using the app".

Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooh

If you are going to be away from home or work, and you know that you are not going to use Wi-Fi connectivity, it will be best if you deactivate it. You can do it quickly and easily from the control center. In this way you will avoid that your iPhone is constantly looking for networks to connect to, which supposes a considerable and unnecessary energy consumption.

And something similar I advise you regarding Bluetooth connectivity. If you do not use an Apple Watch or any other device that connects to the iPhone using this technology, it is best to disable it. You can do it from the control center itself.

Automatic clock adjustment?

This option also involves a battery drain that, although small, you may not need. If you don't usually travel abroad, you don't need the iPhone watch to check if it's at the right time. disable this option in Settings → General → Date and time → Automatic adjustment

Reduce screen brightness

The iPhone screen, like the screen of practically all devices, is one of the main factors that contribute to reducing the terminal's battery. When the screen brightness is full, the battery runs out much earlier. In conditions of high ambient light, the brightness needs to be at maximum, but when the ambient light is low or absent, quite the opposite. So, if it's not strictly necessary, try to reduce screen brightness, something you can easily do from Settings → Screen and brightness.

Activate automatic lock

Following this same line of screen settings, the longer you have it on, the more energy the iPhone consumes. To avoid that your terminal remains too long with the screen active when you are not really using it, try to keep the automatic lock activated. You can do it from Settings → Display and brightness → Automatic lock, you can choose from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Obviously, the more you save the shorter the time span. But beware, adjust it according to your needs because continuously activating the screen will also be an extra expense.

Disable vibration and led notifications

Think about whether you really need these features. With vibration, your iPhone vibrates when you receive calls, messages, etc. With led notifications, the camera flash blinks in the above situations. All this implies energy consumption. If you don't need them, disable them.

  • To disable vibration, go to Settings → Sounds and vibrations and disable the Vibrate with tone and Silent vibration options.

To deactivate the led notifications go to Settings → General → Accessibility and deactivate the flashing LED Alerts in the Hearing section.

Adjust your notifications

On many occasions, we have notifications activated for applications that we do not need. For example, are notifications from a photo editing app really necessary, which you also use only every time it rains in Murcia? This can mean a large battery consumption because each new notification "wakes up" your iPhone, and you know what we have said on the screen.

Go to Settings → Notifications, and select one by one the applications for which you really want to be notified. Remember that, in the vast majority of cases, when you install a new app, your notifications are activated

  • Always keep the operating system updated to the latest software version released by Apple. Use still images as wallpaper, without Parallax effect or others. Turn off automatic app updates from Settings → iTunes Store and App Store → Updates
