One of the simplest but most effective advantages of Apple's macOS operating system is the popular Dock as it provides users with one-click direct access to the most used Mac applications. So much so that there are many other solutions for operating systems such as Ubuntu or Windows to adopt, with greater or lesser success, Mac features such as this Dock. The easiest way to organize the applications anchored to the Dock is to drag them to the preferred place; however, there is a much less known trick that will help you keep the Dock icons even better organized on your Mac.

Group the icons in the Dock

If what you want is to group icons based on criteria such as their frequency of use, their category or others, adding spaces between them is the method that will help you maintain a better organization, especially from a more visual perspective. With the trick that I am going to tell you, you can insert spaces in the dock, and place them where you prefer following the classic method of "drag and drop". Let's see how to insert spaces in the macOS Dock in a quick and simple way.

First of all you should start the Terminal app, which you can find inside the Utilities section in the Applications folder. If you want to quickly access the "Utilities" folder in the Finder, simply select the path Go → Utilities in the menu bar, or use the Shift-Command-U keyboard shortcut.

Once you have opened the Terminal , you must copy and paste the following command and press the Enter key on your keyboard:

defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{“tile-type” = ”spacer-tile”;}'; killall dock

You will notice that the Dock restarts showing a space. Select that space with the mouse and drag it to the desired place, as if it were any other app.

If you want to add more spaces to organize the icons, just open Terminal again and execute the previous command.

And when you want to delete a space from the Dock, simply drag it onto the desktop and drop it as you would any other icon, or right-click on the space and select the Delete from Dock option.
