It is likely that anyone who has a Windows PC installed knows the famous BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) or "Blue Screen Of Death". The name is scary and, of course, it has a good reason: when this blue screen appears, probably everything you were doing will be lost, with no chance of getting it back.
That is because this screen appears without any warning, and does not allow something to be done to avoid it, thus causing a total blockage of Windows.
In other words, in this case, the solution is to restart the computer and try to find out what caused the error so that it does not recur again. Despite the fact that most people will blame Windows for the BSOD, the problem is that, most of the time, some hardware component failed, some driver is incompatible with the system or some Windows update corrupted some system file.
We recommend reading the following tutorials:
Tools to analyze blue screen
Before discussing errors and possible causes, it is interesting to note that there are some important tools to identify problems.
- Blue Screen View: This software allows you to find the history of the blue screens your computer suffered. This helps you to carefully analyze each error. AIDA64: In this application, there is detailed information about the operation of the hardware. It is an ideal tool for identifying conflicts and.CPU-Z errors: along the same lines as AIDA64, this application gives access to a series of real-time data and statistics on the operation of your equipment.
Each type of error that causes a blue screen uses a type of code, created to broadly explain where the problem is. If no code appears on the blue screen, use Blue Screen Viewer to find it.
Diagnosis of the "Blue Screen of Death"
Despite being almost traumatic, the blue screen contains valuable information so that we can start the search for the cause of the problem. Just below the first paragraph ("A problem has been detected and Windows has shutdown") you will see the description of what is causing problems in Windows.
Another important tip is to pay attention to the words and codes that come after ("If the problems continue…"); there is really relevant information there.
The last lines give technical advice to know specifically what was detected as a problem. This error code is important when looking for the solution.
What to do before a blue screen?
- The first step is to do a detailed analysis of your blue screen. It is important that you copy (or take a photo) of the information marked in the image to do an internet search. Maybe you find someone who has had the same problem and solved it. An important tip is to Google the error code found in the "Technical information" field, just after the word "stop". Detailed information about the errors can also be found in the "Event Viewer", which it is a place where Windows records all events, including errors and problems. To do this, open the Control Panel and go to "Administrative Tools"; There, you will find "Team Management". Access this application.
A new window will open. On the left side, on the menu, click Event Viewer> Windows Logs, and expand the selection. Then click "System."
On the main screen, you can see all the events, whether they are problems or not. Accidents are generally marked with a red exclamation point, with the date and time of the event. A double click on the element is enough for a detailed explanation.
- If you haven't found anything, the second step is to check the drivers for the hardware components you have on your PC. In case you have a recently updated driver (just before the error occurred) then the suggestion is to revert the driver to the old version. To do this, go back to the Control Panel and open the "Device Manager" application.
Search for the device that has been updated, for example the graphics card. Right-click on the controller and go to "Properties." A window will open with information. Find the "Controller" tab. You will see a button called "Revert to previous controller". Click there to go back to the old version.
- Another solution is the exact opposite of what you did in the previous step: update peripheral drivers to a newer version, by going to the hardware developer's website RAM may be more prone to blue screens than you you imagine. It is always good to know how the memory modules are working, since they may be presenting errors from a malfunction or even a simple bad contact. Always use programs that check RAM memory, such as MemTest (meter link), and remember to clean the inside of your computer often (in case it is a PC). Something that causes blue screens is the overheating of the components, mainly from the processor. If it reaches very high temperatures, it may shutdown automatically to protect the integrity of the internal circuits. Check the temperature with specific applications for it, such as HWMonitor. In case you notice that the temperature is too high, look to check the CPU fans and heatsink for possible problems. Restoring Windows is a good option. This is why it is so important to always create restore points before making any modifications to the system, or even before installing a program. There is a possibility that the problem hard drives may cause a blue screen, especially if the error is in the Crucial clues to the operating system boot process. The INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE code appears when the computer cannot find valid boot information on the disk that the system stores, for example.
The NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM or FAT_FILE_SYSTEM codes are symptoms that your hard drive is dying. It is an urgent situation: turn off the computer, disconnect the hard drive and make a backup of your data, since the continuous use of this hard drive may end up making the extraction of data unfeasible in the near future. If you can, check with Crystal Disk Info the state of health to be 100% sure of the useful life (if a yellow or red code appears, make the backup quickly).
Even using an external flash drive or HD with corrupted file structure can cause a blue screen. Before worrying about your hard drive, make sure that this error is inevitable when using some kind of external storage device.
Some types of errors in these external storage devices are not possible to be fixed. The best thing you can do is make sure there are backup copies of your data, and use HDD diagnostic applications to check for errors.
- The error is more rare to occur with the graphics card, since at present it is practically impossible to install the wrong driver in any component, since manufacturers and Windows themselves have security measures to avoid this type of situation.
But, if by any chance you receive the VIDEO_DRIVER_INIT_FAILURE message, it means that your computer is running video driver software that is incompatible with the card you are currently using. The THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER error indicates that the display driver has stopped working, waiting for some system instruction that does not finish arriving.
In both cases, uninstall the current video driver and find the appropriate software for the card on the manufacturer's page.
- Next to errors with hard drives, perhaps the most feared is a faulty processor, as it is potentially the most expensive of all: you're going to need a new processor. If you are lucky, it may be a sign that the source does not have the necessary power to make your computer work with stability.
In case the blue screen is accompanied by MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION, there is no doubt that the error is in the processor.
To isolate the problem, first, test your computer with a different processor. In case it does not work, or the blue screen persists, there is a good chance that the error is being caused by the use of a power supply (PSU) unable to make your computer work properly. Try again, but this time with a more powerful font.
- Some complex viruses can, for example, compromise the start of the operating system on the hard drive, the cause of the disk errors that we have explained above.
Other types of malware are able to cancel the operation of essential Windows services, such as video drivers and memory-controlling resources, causing blue screens, giving the impression that the problem is hardware.
Although it is not the most common cause of blue screen, this type of problem should be taken into account before buying new components.
- Exaggerated overclocking causes the team to try to work at speeds much higher than the limits established by the manufacturer. Instability causes blue screen and the most common error in these episodes is UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP.
Another common case of this error is when the power supply cannot supply the peripheral components with sufficient stable current.
When nothing works
If none of the suggestions above works, there is still an option. Windows files can be restored from the installation CD.
Just insert it into the reader or USB and follow the instructions on the screen. The system will install all the important elements, keeping your data and documents safe. But this is not always a guarantee of solving the problem. You may have to format the entire system from scratch, doing a full format.
If after all this you still haven't been able to solve at least part of the problem, the last alternative is to really call a computer technician and delegate responsibility to a professional. Although everything looks like you must change the motherboard.
With the following information and these tools in your hands, you will have data to try to solve the appearance of the blue screen alone or BSOD. At least, you will be provided with details to explain to your technician. We hope you are lucky and if you have any questions you can ask us.
