Changing the screen to the lenovo y50
A few months ago I purchased the Lenovo Y50-70 ultrabook which is slim, powerful and very light in weight. I bought it as standard with a 4th generation Haswell i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, GTX860M graphics card and a 1TB hybrid hard drive. The first update was to change the mechanical hard drive for a solid state one, which made it take advantage of 100% of this equipment.
What was my problem… that after trying several laptops with an IPS panel and my devotion to color fidelity, I no longer looked with the same eyes at my Lenovo and its TN panel. I did a little research on Google which panel would be compatible and if the price would compensate, what was my surprise? That the change would hardly imply a disbursement of € 90 !! So I decided to change it (because he who does not risk does not win).. and is that I refuse to buy a Macbook Pro 15 ″ or throw away another laptop losing a significant amount of money.
So you can see the quality of the TN panel that comes standard, I leave you this image gallery.
What material do I need to replace my screen?
- IPS screen B156HAN01.2. Precision screwdriver (star). Plastic card. A piece of cloth or plastic. Very patient.
The operation must be carried out on a table without any type of obstacle and the work area allows us to be comfortable. One of the most complex steps is when we insert the card into the bottom right hand slot of the laptop. It is clearly seen that there is a gap between the plastics (see the following image). We will keep opening all the protective plastic until we keep it and keep it in a safe place.
Once the protector is removed, we find the TN screen. We will proceed to remove the four screws that hold each corner of the panel… but first we will put a cloth to avoid scratching.
Once the protective plastic has been removed
Star screw.
We have to withdraw a total of 4.
Now we will proceed to remove the sticker that is attached to the strip of the monitor. We will remove the TN panel and proceed to perform the same steps in reverse. The result would be like that of the fourth image.
Rear of the TN panel.
Plastic protector
30-pin connector.
Belt that connects panel and laptop board.
As I was not sure if I had done it correctly or the panel had dead pixels, I proceeded to turn on the laptop and check that it worked before completing the assembly.
As you can see it was perfect… so I proceeded to fix the panel to the base of the laptop, remove the protective plastic from it and finish the assembly. Which it was the result?
A spectacular change, now if I can edit my images with good color fidelity, play and not suffer sudden color changes in viewing angles. Is it really worth it? Without a doubt, yes. At least this model change is very easy and anyone (with patience) can change it. It takes just 15 minutes…
Furthermore, I would like to emphasize that the laptop cost me € 940. I added the Crucial MX100 SSD for just € 90 and this screen for € 90, the entire investment has been € 1, 120, which comparing them to other notebooks with the same characteristics easily costs € 1, 600. I can't be happier;).
