Intel revealed during its launch that the Cascade Lake-X chips are bringing new network technology to the desktop with its i225-V controller for 2.5Gbps Ethernet, while its AX200 module is added for Wi-Fi 6 wireless connectivity.
Cascade Lake-X, Intel I get the technologies brings Wi-Fi 6 and 2.5GbE to the desktop
After more than a decade of 1Gbps Ethernet, Intel is now moving to 2.5GbE PHY with its i225-V Ethernet controller, codenamed Foxville. The chip is now expected to be integrated into the new LGA2066 motherboards for the recently announced Cascade Lake-X HEDT (High-End Desktop) processors.
Realtek, Broadcom, and multi-gigabit Ethernet leader Aquantia have already released their 2.5GbE PHYs, so Intel isn't the only brand with 2.5GbE PHY. However, Intel's move to this faster generation is likely to accelerate widespread adoption.
Intel is the most popular GbE vendor with its i218-V and i219-V controllers, explaining that Intel Ethernet controllers are low in cost due to their reliance on PCH-based MAC and a proprietary PCIe-based bus, which reinforces its appeal.
Cascade Lake-X will also be compatible with Wi-Fi 6, previously known as 802.11ax.
Wi-Fi 6 is expected to have rapid adoption, with an adoption rate of over 50% at different endpoints by 2022. Wi-Fi 6 provides a theoretical bandwidth of up to 2.4 Gb / s. Cascade Lake-X support follows in the footsteps of 10th generation portable processors. However, the support is different for the two platforms.
With its 10th generation CPUs, Intel integrates Wi-Fi 6 into the 400 series notebook chipsets. Intel claims that the RF module package is 70% smaller than the fully discrete solution, and that the silicon area combined is 15% smaller. Intel does not integrate the RF component because that would require Wi-Fi certification at the system level rather than the module, which would be a headache for partners. It also enables Intel to build the RF analog component in the UMC 28nm process.

Wi-Fi 6 support on Cascade Lake-X only means that the platform is compatible with Intel's PCIe-based AX200 adapter.
This leap in improving communication performance will be vital, now that fiber optic Internet connections are becoming more common. Cascade Lake-X processors will be available in November.
