European Commission fines capacitor producers of € 254m
Table of contents:
The European Commission has issued a millionaire fine to capacitor manufacturers for around 254 million euros. The targets of the latest fine on price association and manipulation target nine Japanese manufacturers of capacitors (capacitors), which the European Commission discovered that they had conspired to unduly raise prices between 1998 and 2012.
Sanyo, Hitachi and NEC among those fined by the European Commission
The companies fined by the European Commission would be the following; Sanyo, Hitachi, Rubycon, ELNA, Tokin, NEC, Matsuo, Nichicon, Nippon Chemi-Con, Vishay Polytech, Holy Stone Holdings and Holy Stone Enterprises. However, Tokin, Elna, Rubycon and Hitachi received reductions in their respective fines for cooperating with the investigation. The biggest individual fine, totaling 97, 921, 000 euros, went to Nippon Chemi-Con. Sanyo, however, outwitted all of its competitors: The company sidestepped the fine altogether for bringing the matter to the Commission's attention in the first place. This is an interesting tactic: proceed to join a partnership, extract profits, and then hand the partners over to the regulatory agencies in exchange for immunity.
The investigation concluded that the participants in this criminal association knew the anti-competitive nature of their behavior, as evidenced by their intention to hide it. For example, messages exchanged between companies or internal emails containing meeting reports, which were kept secret between manufacturers to agree on prices.
Is the same happening with prices and a shortage of RAM? Recall that there is already ongoing research on this topic as well.
