In this step by step we will see how to create and activate Windows 10 guest account. You may remember that in previous versions of Windows this account is active by default, and on the lock screen, if we had a user password, we had the option to enter as a guest. But this is currently not possible to do. In addition, we must indicate that there is a command to activate this account from a command prompt with " net user invited / active: yes " that will NOT work for us.

This changed with the latest versions of Windows, and this account is not active by default on our system. It is for this reason that we must create new user accounts with the inconvenience this causes. This is due to a security policy that Windows 10 implements so that there are no guest accounts on the system.

The guest account is especially useful if our team is also used occasionally by other users who do not have the need to perform advanced actions on the team. Thanks to this, these users will be able to carry out the typical procedures from the account without worrying about them having access to important equipment configurations or snooping in our files.

Why we do not recommend activating Guest account

The Windows 10 guest account exists on our computer, but even if it is activated, it will not be possible to use it unless we edit its group policies.

This involves accessing the Group Policy Editor, which is also not initially enabled in Windows 10 Home for example, making the process unnecessarily complicated.

In short, we think that it is not worth trying to activate the guest account if we have better options such as creating a new account with normal user permissions.

Create Windows 10 guest account

Without further delay, let's begin the procedure. We must emphasize that the name of " Guest " will not be possible to use it for the reason that we explained at the beginning.

To make this process as simple as possible and more accessible we are going to perform the procedure with the command of advanced options of user accounts " netplwiz ". You will need to be in an account with administrator permissions to perform this action.

  • Press the key combination " Windows + R " to open the Run tool. Now we write the command:

netplwiz

Then we press Enter to execute it. A window will appear to manage the accounts of our user in the system.

  • Click on the button " Add... " and the wizard will appear to create a new account. We choose the option " sign in without a Microsoft account " and click " Next "

  • On the next screen we choose " Local account "

  • Now we write the name of the user account and we can leave the " Password " space empty as we intend it to be for guests.

The account creation process will be completed.

Group assignment of the guest user

  • Now located again on the main screen we will have our new user. We are going to click on the " Properties " button

  • We go to the "Group Membership " tab. The membership group must be " Users ". We can select " Standard User " or go to " Other " and choose " User "

We could also choose " Guests ", but it would explain that the permissions are exactly the same, except for the user " Guest " who would be more restricted. But as we have explained, Guest is not available for access in Windows 10

  • Once explained and done, click on " Accept " and the account will be perfectly functional on our team

In this way we can Add and activate a Windows 10 guest account for access by other users than us.
