If we have a SmartTV in our house and it has a network connection port or Wi-Fi wireless technology, this tutorial will be very useful for you. Let's see how we can share multimedia files between our computer and our SmartTV using DLNA.

What is DLNA

DLNA or Digital Living Network Alliance is a standardized technology or intercom protocol for devices via network. Its creation was carried out by the association of manufacturers of electronic and computer devices so that we are able to share information between totally different devices such as a computer and a television.

Activating DLNA in Windows 10 will allow us to make our computer a multimedia file server that through a Wi-Fi or LAN network so that our SmartTV is capable of reproducing these files without the need to connect a device specifically designed for this.

DLNA is not exactly new, since it has been between us without us realizing it from Windows 7, so it has already rained.

Activate DLNA in Windows 10

To configure our equipment as a DLNA server we must do the following:

  • We go to the beginning and write " Multimedia streaming options " We click on the option that appears to us available.

  • This option will also be available in the control panel, within the " Network and Sharing Center " section. We click on the button " Activate streaming media streaming "

In this way, a series of devices and some available configuration options will appear:

  • We can define a name for the multimedia library Assign which devices or programs will have access to the medium

If we click on the option " Personalize " in " Multimedia programs of this equipment and remote connections " we can configure which folders our SmartTV will be able to see

In this way we will have activated the option to share resources through the network. Now what we will have to do is start sharing content.

For this, what we will have to do is insert the content into the folders that make the functions of multimedia libraries. These folders are:

  • ImagesMusicVideos

Let's share for example a movie in the videos folder

Now we are going to go to our TV to see if the content is available. Normally what we will have to do is go to the Smart button and access the " connections " section

The list shows us several available options. For now the one that interests us is the icon that represents a multimedia folder with our name. This is where we have the movie stored.

If we access its interior we can see that the file we have shared is indeed found

DLNA with LG SmartShare

If, like us, you have an LG SmartTV, we will have a specific application called SmartShare available to do a similar procedure. This application is also based on DLNA for data transmission between devices. The requirements that we must meet to carry out the configuration are:

  • Have both the SmartTV and the computer connected to a network Have the LG SmartShare application installed on both the TV and the PC

To download this totally free application we go to its official website. Then we will install it through some simple and typical steps. The result will be as follows:

To share files we will have to carry out the following procedure:

  • In the main window, click on the " Power " button if it is not already on. We go to the " Allow / Block other devices " tab and our connected SmartTV should appear there. If it does not appear, we click on the “ Update ” button represented by two arrows in a loop.

  • Now we go to the " My shared content " tab. To add a shared folder, click on the folder symbol with a "+" After searching for the folder you want, click on " OK " and it will be added. Then we click " Apply " so that the changes take effect on the network. It's time to go back to SmartTV

Doing the previous steps and in this case accessing the shared folder with the SmartShare symbol we can see how our folder is already available

In any case, we can see that the procedure is quite simple in both cases. The only thing that is more difficult is locating the option within the control panel.
