The truth is that sometimes we are many hours on a PC. Regular breaks are recommended to clear your eyes and head. Windows by default implements the option to suspend the system to be able to turn off our equipment without losing what we were doing at the time of resting. But in addition there is also another possibility and that is hibernation, although it is not activated in this version and yes in previous ones such as Windows XP or Vista.
What is the difference between hibernate and suspend
The first thing we should know is what is the difference between these two options and why Microsoft has decided to disable it by default in the system.
- Suspend: When we suspend the computer, Windows stores information about what we were doing and the state of the machine in RAM. In this sense, more energy is required to keep this information in the main memory of the system. Since, if it were without food, this information would be lost. Hibernate: In the event that we hibernate our system, Windows will store the configuration of the current state of the machine on the hard disk. In this way, no power would be required to maintain the configuration files.
Regarding performance or speed, after a period of suspension, the computer will start immediately. While if we come from a state of hibernation, the computer will take longer to start since it must take the information from the hard disk and this takes more time.
In short, hibernation is aimed at situations in which the computer will be off for longer.
Enable hibernate option Windows 10
The first option we have to enable hibernation is through the Windows power options. Let's do the following procedure:
- We go to the Windows control panel. To do this we open the start and write "Control Panel" We put in the appearance of the control panel the "Icon view" to position ourselves better. We locate the "Power Options" icon and the configuration window of the plans will appear energy that we have assets.
- Now we go to the options that appear on the left side of this window and choose the option "Choose the action of the start / stop buttons"
- Within the new window we choose the option at the top that says "Change the configuration currently not available"
- In this way we activate an option list at the bottom of the window. Among them it seems that of "Hibernate"
- We then activate this option, and we will already have this option available in the Windows shutdown menu
Enable hibernate option Windows 10 using PowerShell
It is possible that when we access the power options by the previous method, the Hibernate option does not appear in the configuration. To enable this option we will have to do the following:
- We open the start menu and write "PowerShell" In the option that appears at the top, we right-click on it and choose "Run as administrator"
- Once inside the finish we will write the following command:
powercfg / H on
In this way we will have activated the hibernate option, and this option should appear enabled in the options menu of the control panel.
- If we want to deactivate this option again, we will have to write the following command:
powercfg / H off
In this way we deactivate the hibernate option
When we execute the command the terminal will not show us any message, but the changes will have taken effect
Power saving configuration options
In addition to the hibernate option, in Windows we will have many options in terms of configuring our power plan. We will find all of them in "Control Panel -> Power Options". Let's see what we can do in our desktop team:
Normally we will find two energy plans, the Balanced and the Economizer. We are going to select within the Balanced plan "Change plan settings"
The screen shows two basic options, the waiting time to turn off the screen and the waiting time to put the equipment to sleep.
If we now choose the option "Change advanced power settings" we will be shown additional options to configure this.
At the top we can choose the energy plan that we want to customize. In our case it is "Balanced". Here we will have options such as shutting down hard drives after a while, sleep options, power settings for the PCI-Express slots, and setting the chassis buttons to turn off and on.
They are very interesting options if we want our team to save energy in the management of the components. So you should look at them in case you want to try any of them.
