Frequently it happens that we obtain a folder from another user, or we want to access certain content and we are not allowed access. We will see how to change folder permissions in Windows 10 to be able to access and modify a folder or file that we need. In addition, we will also see how to assign permissions to a certain user to access a shared folder on our network.

Index of contents

This happens even in our own files, as an example to reinstall Windows 10 and access the Windows.old folder to get our files from the users folder. It is possible that having changed the user in the system now we do not have permission or a window appears every time we try to access it.

In this and other cases such as access to shared files on the network, it would be very useful to be able to change the folder permission to access or edit its content.

Change folder permissions in Windows 10

In this section we will try to change these permissions so that we, with our user, can acquire control of any folder.

In the previous image we see that to access the folder we will have to provide administrator permission to access.

But it is also that if we try, we also do not have access or even enter it. We must say that our system user has administrator permissions, otherwise we could not do the following actions.

  • To access the properties of the folder, right-click on it and choose " Properties "

  • Now a window will open in which we must go to the " Security " tab. Click on " Advanced options "

  • In the new window, click on " change " in the " owner " line

  • Now a window will open to select the user that we want to be the owner of the folder. If we know the username, we just have to type it and click on " Check names "

  • To search for users in our team, click on " Advanced options " and in the new window on " Search now ". All the users of the team will be listed

  • Once chosen, we then click on " Accept " Back in the previous window, we activate the box " Replace owner in subcontainers and objects " We click on " Apply " and " Accept ", it will ask us to close the options to validate the new permissions

  • To add more users with permissions to this folder, we will have to go back to the " Security " tab and press " Advanced Options " again. Now we must click on the " Add " button

  • Then, in "Select a security entity", we locate another user that we want. Once chosen, we activate the "Full control " box in the main window. We also choose in " Applies to: " the option of " This folder, subfolders and files

In this way it will be added to the folder's permission entries

Change network shared folder permissions

If what we have is a shared network folder and we want other users to be able to, in addition to accessing it, edit its content, we will have to do the following:

  • In the team in charge of sharing the folder, we right-click on it and choose " properties " again. We go to the " Share " tab

Allow access to a specific user

To add a certain user in the permissions of this folder, we will have two possibilities, either create the user on the computer that shares the folder or be within an Active Directory network

We obviously do not have Active Directory, so if we want to give permissions to a specific user, we will have to do the following:

  • Click on the " share " button In the new window, we unfold the list that appears and choose " Create a user "

  • We will directly access the control panel, where we will have to press the option " Manage another account "

  • In the new window that appears we will have to click on " Add a new user in Settings " Then in the new window click again on " Add another person to this team "

  • We will only have to put the user name of the other computer so that it can access the folder. Once created, we go again to the " Share " window, display the list and click on the new user created. The user will be added. To assign all the permissions, click on " Permission level " and select " Read and write " Finally click on " Share "

If we now try to access the folder from the other computer, we can already do it normally

Allow access to all users

This is even easier to do. Starting again from the " Share " window, we will do the following:

  • Click on " Advanced Sharing " or, as before, on " Sharing " in both cases. We will use the first option.

  • Now we click on " Permissions ", and, located on " All " we activate the " total control " box

We accept in all the windows that we have opened and we will already have access to the folder from any location and user.

This is the way to manage permissions in Windows 10, both for normal folders and shared folders.
