As usually happens Windows always starts to update itself at the most inopportune moments. In addition to having the possibility of postponing updates, we will also have the option to disable Windows 10 updates, although this option is not visible at all.
Windows 10 updates
If one thing Microsoft has improved its operating system is the updates section. Now practically every week updates are installed on our equipment, whether they are important or trivial.
We can differentiate various types of updates in our system, of which each one will have its own characteristics and possibilities.
- Non-Deferrable Updates - These are small updates where you don't normally need to restart your computer. In addition, they are installed automatically without prior notice or warning and almost always deal with security issues and not drivers or important aspects of the system. Quality updates: These are typical updates that include both security and Windows driver updates, not necessarily from the system itself. These updates are deferrable for 35 days. Typically released on the second Tuesday of each month. Feature Updates - These are larger packages that release semi-annually. They include major system modifications such as new features or functionalities. These updates will notify us of their installation.
To modify the preferences regarding updates we need to have one of the following versions of Windows:
- Pro Enterprise Education
Defer updates
There is the possibility of postponing certain updates to avoid delays in turning off our equipment or restarting it. Let's see what we should do:
- We go to start and open the system configuration (gear icon on the left) We go to the last option of all where it says "Update and security"
- Now we go the link of "advanced options"
In this new screen we can choose different parameters, the ones that interest us are the following:
- Pause updates section: by activating this button we can postpone updates to our team for up to 35 days. After this time Windows will return to the old ways, updating everything you have not done during this time.
- “Choose when updates will be installed” section: in the second and third option that we have in this section, we will be able to postpone feature updates (large) for 365 days and quality updates for up to 30 days.
But if what we want is to deactivate Windows Update we also have the possibility of doing it.
Disable Windows 10 updates
To do this what we will have to do is directly stop the service that runs on our Windows Update system. We must do the following:
We go to Start and write "Control Panel". Next, we choose the option marked above to access it.
- Once inside, the best thing to do is change the presentation to "View by: icons". Now we find the "Administrative tools" icon and access it.
- In this new screen we find the direct link that says "Services". We access it.
- In the service viewer we locate "Windows Update" Right- click on it and access its properties
- Within this window we go to the "Startup type" option and select "Disabled". In this way, the service will not run, Windows will not update. In addition, we also give the "Stop" button to stop the service at this very moment. Finally, we accept to allow the changes to take effect.
Turn off Windows 10 updates using Group Policy
Another method of doing this is by editing your system's group policies. To access it we will do the following:
- Press the key combination "Windows + R" and the run window will open. Here we write the command "gpedit.msc" and press Enter This will open the Windows group policy window
- Now in the left side tree we display "Computer Configuration", then "Administrative Templates" and then "Windows Components"
- We go to the end where the "Windows Update" folder appears and click on it. All available policies for this service will appear on the right side.
- Now we are going to locate the policy that has the name "Configure automatic updates" Right-click and choose "Edit" In the window that opens we must choose the "Disable" option . In this way we have been able to disable Windows 10 updates.
From this window we can also activate the option to postpone updates. For this we must locate the directive of "Postpone the update" and choose the parameter "Enable". Please note that this policy will not be available in Windows Home.
