The KDE Plasma 5.8 LTS desktop environment was officially released in October, but it landed on Kubuntu backports just this weekend. This popular environment is available to install on those Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.10 systems.

We are going to discuss the necessary steps for the installation of KDE Plasma 5.8 in Ubuntu but before, we do a quick review of the new features that this version brings. These new features correspond to KDE plasma 5.8.4 compared to previous versions 5.7 and 5.5 used in Yakkety Yak and Xenial respectively:

  • New login and lock screen Right-to-left language support Better applets, including music player controls Easier keyboard editing and editing New monospace font Optional breeze-grub theme theme enhancements

Installing KDE Plasma 5.8

Although it is an LTS version of this desktop environment, it is distributed through a PPA. We should not expect the same level of support that is given to the KDE Plasma version that comes by default in the distribution.

We also recommend our tutorial to Run Linux distros from a Pendrive

This PPA provides the KDE plasma LTS for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.10 LTS.

To start installing we are going to type the following command in Terminal:

Sudo add-apt-repository ppa: kubuntu-ppa / backports

In case you don't have the Kubuntu-desktop installed, you will have to install it first with the command:

Sudo apt update and & sudo apt install kubuntu-desktop

This process can take a while, as you will have to install a number of applications and dependencies.

Once Kubuntu-desktop is installed, we will execute:

Sudo apt update && sudo apt dist-upgrade

Once finished, you can restart the computer to start enjoying the news of KDE Plasma 5.8.
