So what does all this have to do with RAM? If this type of memory did not exist, every time our processor needed any data, it would send a signal to our hard drive and automatically start looking for that data, the problem is that the hard drive is so slow, that this process would take a eternity. This is where RAM comes in, acting as an intermediary between the processor and the hard disk, being so fast it allows you to continuously store new data for our CPU.

The different types of RAM memories

There are several types of RAM, the ones we are going to set for this guide are the DDR (Double Data Rate) type, they are characterized by being able to carry out two operations in each clock cycle.

Here is a summary with the key characteristics of each type:

• DDR memory: it is the oldest version, used in the equipment of the time that mounted Pentium 4 and Athlon processors. DDR2 memories: it is still possible to see them on some PC, since they were used in computers with LGA775 and AM2 sockets. Surely that computer that your parents bought years ago, carries this type of memory. DDR3 Memories: It is still being marketed and has a strong presence in current equipment, since it has been used with LGA1150 (Core 4000) and AM3 + (FX) sockets. DDR4 memories: it is the current standard and the one with the highest performance.

Method 1: through the run window

Since Windows 98, Microsoft includes a tool integrated into the operating system called System Information (msinfo32.exe), which allows you to collect all the information on your PC.

To use it is very simple:

1. Press the key with the Windows logo on your keyboard and the R key at the same time. Automatically a small window will appear in the lower left part of the interface.

   

   Now copy and paste the exe command and hit " OK." On the right side you will see various data from your computer (processor, motherboard, etc.), you just have to look at the " installed physical memory (RAM) " at the bottom.

   

Method 2: Through Task Manager

You can also check your RAM from the Task Manager in Windows 10. To do this, follow these steps below:

1. Press the Ctrl key, the Shift key and the Esc key at the same time on your keyboard and the Task Manager will open. If you have never opened the task manager, only a window will appear with the programs or applications that you have open at that moment, for the next step it is very important to click on " More details ".

Method 3: through the control panel

The Control Panel is a feature of Windows 10 that allows us to verify any information and diagnose certain problems on our computer.

1. Type " Control Panel" in the Start Menu search bar, then click Control Panel to open it.

   

   Once inside the control panel we will see all the elements grouped by categories, we click on " System and security ".

   

   After that we select the option " See the amount of memory and the speed of the processor ". From there all the data of your equipment will appear, including the processor, the name of the computer, operating system and, obviously, the installed RAM memory.

   

Method 4: using external programs

This method is the most complete of all, since, when using external programs, in this case, HW info, we can know all kinds of characteristics, such as the brand or manufacturer of our RAM, the speed of it, the type of memory (DDR4, DDR3), if it is in Dual Channel, etc.

1. We download HW info on its website, run it and when it opens, a window will appear, click on “ Summary-only ” and press Run.

   

   Once opened, you can see that it shows information about our processor and graphics card, in this case, we would only look at the bottom left.
