The first screen of Samsung Magician informs us of the state of our SSD, and even shows the amount of data that has been written. This is very important, as the memory cells of an SSD support a limited number of written data before it breaks. It also informs us of the version of the installed firmware, the interface, the AHCI mode, the status of the TRIM, the Rapid Mode and the amount of total and free space of the SSD.

Performance benchmark

The following section offers a benchmark integrated into the application itself. This is very important, since we can analyze the performance of the SSD and compare it with the data offered by the manufacturer. In case of not coinciding, we can think that there is some kind of problem with our SSD. This test informs us of both the speed of sequential and random data.

Performance optimization

This section corresponds to TRIM technology. This technology monitors the memory blocks that are free and marks them as such so that the controller has them located and available at all times. Thanks to TRIM, the SSD knows exactly where to store new data, without having to search for a free memory cell first. This allows our SSD to work much faster than the TRIM. Over Provisioning

Next we have over-provisioning. This technology allows us to reserve an amount of the SSD space to be used exclusively by the controller. This space works as a kind of write cache. Instead of reallocating storage pages and array storage blocks during a given write operation, this is the over-provisioning space for temporary data storage, until the garbage self-collection algorithm has erased all the contents of the blocks a used. This way, the controller doesn't have to wait for the garbage self-collection algorithm to do its job, which means it can work at its maximum capacity.

This over-provisioning is the cause that all SSDs have less available space than declared, in fact they do, but it is transparent to the operating system. With Samsung Magician we can modify the amount of this space, to improve the performance of the SSD, although at the cost of losing some storage capacity.

Secure erase

Finally we have the secure erase, which allows us to delete in a totally secure way all the data stored in the SSD. This is very important if we have confidential data, and we want to make sure that nobody can ever get it back. Your SSD will be as it came from the store you bought it from.
